Aurora Borealis shines above Marblehead Light

That was INCREDIBLE!   When talk began about a geomagnetic storm, I started to get excited about possibly capturing the aurora borealis over Marblehead once more. Then when the storm grew in intensity before sunset, I held out hope it might continue for a few more hours.   I started off at Cove Lane but realized very quickly that the so-called Northern Lights were far more to the east than I had expected. I quickly walked over to Chandler Hovey Park and set up for this composition with Marblehead light in the center of the frame and angled the camera [...]

Lighting Up Little Harbor

Taking a short break from the 'This Day in Marblehead' series is this image captured this morning in Little Harbor. I had woken at 5 with the anticipation of the first snowfall of the season and found a nice light coating of white in our front and backyard. After a leisurely hour, I headed out to the Little Harbor Lobster Company in the hopes of capturing the First Harbor boat with its annual Christmas tree display. I realized the other day that I had been photographing this scene since 2014 and still recall those early days when the lights might [...]

Mid-November Harbor

A few days ago, I decided to start sharing prior images on a regular basis on my social media pages. I called the series 'On this Day in Marblehead' and would share every image captured on that particular day. I only had one image to share on November 15th that I had captured in 2009 but, as I drove back from the UPS store (matted print on its way to Maine), I spotted a break in the clouds and figured there was a 50:50 chance of a decent sunset. I grabbed my bag and headed out across the causeway and [...]

Abbot Hall in the Fall

I headed out just after noon to run a few errands but also made sure to bring my drone along. I had seen Jack Attridge's gorgeous sunrise shot of Abbot Hall the other day and was surprised at the foliage surrounding it as I had seen very little to capture from the ground. Sure enough, once I was flying, I spotted some great color in the trees surrounding Abbot Hall and went about exploring compositions. I came away with four favorites to share.

Ware the Colors Shine

I had just about given up on capturing any foliage images this fall as the trees seem to all share a muted color tone after excessive rain this summer.  As luck would have it, I was off today (a bonus Thursday in Marblehead) and received a text from my wife with a photo of Ware Pond she had seen posted to Facebook that day. The photo had been taken by Rachel Sullivan who happens to have several large prints of mine hanging in her home which overlooks this spot in town - small world... Having noted the building clouds, I [...]

Forgotten Sunset

A funny thing happened when I returned from capturing the Marblehead high school football game on Friday night. I had been shooting with two cameras and, upon importing photos from the second, I discovered this 'forgotten sunset'. I had gone out on Saturday, August 26th after spending that hot afternoon on the field in Lynn shooting the boys' football scrimmage. On the way home, I noted some incoming clouds and ventured out again as soon as the light started to change. I made it across the causeway and parked on Flint Street before doubling back and walking down Harbor Avenue [...]

Cotton Candy Sky over Marblehead Neck

A few more images from that unexpected sunset on August 30th as I awaited the rise of the super blue moon from Front Street. I shared a tighter composition of the Corinthian which you can make out in the two shots that include Marblehead Light but ended up fascinated by the cotton candy sky over Marblehead neck as I pointed the camera deeper into the harbor. There are two very similar photos looking straight across the harbor from Fort beach but I couldn't decide which I preferred so figured would share both rather than relegating one to the 'to be [...]

Cloudy with a Chance of Moonrise

For those wondering after I mentioned it in last night's post, this was the scene that greeted the 30+ photographers and other moonwatchers as we all gathered along Front Street hoping to capture the super blue moon rising behind Marblehead Light. I have three more nice sunset shots from after the one taken of the Corinthian that I'll share tomorrow. Enjoy the very summer like weather on this Labor Day weekend!

Corinthian Sunset

I spent a good part of this Saturday catching up on photos taken over the past week during a high school football scrimmage, an attempt at capturing the super blue moon rising (and then succeeding far more with its setting) as well as portraits of all 40 members of the Marblehead high school cheer team.  As I worked through the images, I found some gems from the night of August 30th as I stood along Front Street with at least 30 others waiting for the moon to rise. I had spotted some clouds near the horizon that my gut told [...]

Picture Perfect Moonset

Last night, approximately 30 photographers lined Front Street hoping to capture the rise of August's super blue full moon only to be skunked by cloud cover. I managed a few shots of an unexpectedly nice sunset before packing up and heading home. It dawned on me later that night the moonset may be a much better opportunity given the predictions for cool dry air to be approaching Marblehead overnight. I set the alarm for 5:30am and made my way out to Chandler Hovey Park where I saw one other photographer who appeared to have realized the same thing. I took [...]
