Old North Church – A Study in Angles

For the past 5 years, the Old North Church has resisted all of my attempts to photograph it. While I’ve shot from its cupola, the building is so tall and the street below so tight, that I was never able to capture the full facade of the beautiful structure before without angling the camera upwards and introducing horrible distortions. With Canon's newest super wide lens on loan, I was able to stand across the street and take an image head on capturing the full stature of Old North Church enveloped in clouds. I then wandered up and down Washington Street [...]

Towering on Washington Street

It's easy to fall into the habit of shooting the water around Marblehead - from beaches, parks, public ways and elsewhere.  I have been trying to be better about shooting other areas of town farther away from the water and which help showcase the beauty of the Town of Marblehead. On one outing in late April, I had gone out to shoot a particle tree along Washington Street.  After getting that composition, I made my way around the grounds of the Jeremiah Lee mansion and found a number of new vantage points from which to capture Abbot Hall and its newly [...]

Abbot Hall and the Scaffolding

This past week, I had visited Abbot Hall and discovered that the red drapery and large M had been removed leaving bare scaffolding in place.  After inquiring, I was told that the clock faces were being installed and that the project was coming to a close. Figured this would be a good time to share one image of the large M that had adorned Abbot Hall tower over the Summer and early Fall.

Marblehead Light

I had a tough time deciding on an image to share today.  The forecast is for 22 degrees and snow to start off this mid-April day which is depressing, frustrating and borderline ridiculous. I couldn't decide between a shot of snow showing that it could be worse or an image of boats in the harbor to get us over this hump in bad weather.  As I scrolled through the archive, I found this simple composition of Marblehead Light and decided it fit well. I've never shared an image of Marblehead Light without incorporating its full structure or at least the [...]

The Warwick Theater – Then and Now

Recently, I happened upon images of London where old and new photos were superimposed drawing incredible contrasts and similarities as a result.  I remembered that I had gone out during the Winter parking ban in 2010 to capture images of the Warwick before it was slated for demolition and decided to see if I might be able to match up the modern version of that theater.  And so, on the morning of March 23rd, I headed to Pleasant Street and set up for a shot of the facade of the Warwick Theater. I found an image that came close to [...]

Running in the Fog at Fort Sewall

We had some incredible fog on the morning of September 11, 2013.  I had started off capturing Marblehead Harbor as the sun burned through the fog.  As the sun rose in the sky, the color of the sky took on a great orange hue.  I ended up chasing that light all the way to Front Street and Fort Beach.  When all was said and done, I had over 30 images with various compositions and light to share. It's no surprise then that this image has taken a while to see the light of day.  As you can see the orange [...]

A Star atop Abbot Hall – Happy New Year from Wednesdays in Marblehead

One last image to finish up an incredible year of capturing and sharing my images of Marblehead.  I had noticed that the star on the Marblehead Trading Company crane seemed to line up awfully close to the top of Abbot Hall when I crossed the causeway and had made a note to try to return at sunset to capture this image. On Friday, December 27th, I got out of work early enough to drive straight to Devereux Beach, park in the lot and make my way along the causeway to this one spot where the crane seemed to be placing [...]

Abbot Hall on a Foggy Night

Near the end of my two hours of capturing scenes of fog on this early December night, I found myself driving by Abbot Hall.  I had noticed the spotlights shining on Abbot Hall tower previously but they were more impressive on this night with fog serving to accentuate the light.  I found this angle offered me the chance to capture both spotlights as they hit the tower and was pleased with the added light near the front door serving as a counter to the light on the tower of Abbot Hall.

Abbot Hall Under the Tree

I've photographed Abbot Hall countless times at this point and so, when I spotted a new vantage point and composition on the morning of August 3rd, a huge grin plastered itself on my face.  This was taken shortly after yesterday's image of the float at Crocker Park as I made my way back to the car. The sun had risen into the morning sky and I had exhausted all possible compositions and angles to be had on this particular morning.  As I walked by the tree at Crocker Park and saw that Abbot Hall could be seen under its full [...]

Marblehead Powder House – Built in 1755

It never ceases to amaze me just how much history resides in this small town of ours.  The Marblehead Powder House is a prime example of that.  Situated on Green Street (a fairly busy residential street) and tucked in just a bit from the sidewalk stands this circular brick structure.  The only sign suggesting its history is the date above the door - it reads 'BUILT 1755'. A bit of searching reveals that the Powder House was built on what was then called Ferry Road to serve as storage for muskets and ammunition.  It did so during the French and [...]
