Abbot Hall Tower Illuminated in the Fog

Judge's Award - Marblehead Arts Association Summer Member Exhibit June 2013 On Monday, May 6th, I arrived home and noted that fog was starting to roll in.  I decided to grab the kids and my camera and head out in hopes of capturing the unique beauty of foggy scenes.  We started off on Parker Lane - me with my camera, they with an old dSLR.  The fog would thicken to the point of hiding the distant mainland and the sun at times and then quickly dissipate revealing the shores again. From there we drove up to Chandler Hovey Park and [...]

Stacked Houses and Abbot Hall at Christmas

On December 24th, I found myself at Crocker Park awaiting the sunset and the lighting of the lighthouse's decorative lights.  As I looked back toward Abbot Hall, I noted the familiar scene of houses seemingly stacked on each other with Abbot overlooking them all.  The scene was made unique by the lit Christmas tree in that first home and I set about getting this image between shots of pink clouds and the harbor's last boats under a pinkish/purple sky.

The Fire Station

Ever since I first started this project, I had this image in mind.  Trouble was, I could never seem to get the right conditions for this shot.  Either the light was wrong or one of the trucks was out or the bay doors weren't all open.  On a particularly hot Summer day, I drove by and almost couldn't believe my luck.  I quickly parked and setup in front of the station.  The hardest part was waiting for a break in traffic (the passing cars were reflected in the shiny chrome) and standing there while an unbelievable number of cars pulled [...]

Welcome to the Town of Marblehead

At the corner of Lafayette and Maple stands a sign welcoming visitors to the Town of Marblehead and proclaiming this as the birthplace of the American Navy.  A dropped anchor lies in the grassy median before it and I have been searching for a way to depict this scene.  When I noted the flowers on the nearby shrub, I knew the opportunity had arrived.  I stood across the street and shot this during breaks in traffic.  The first obstacle was a yield sign that had to be removed.  The second was turning this photo into something a bit 'more'. Technical: [...]

The Steinway and the Mansion

Ever since I sat in this room with my daughter watching a ballet recital, I've wanted to come back and capture the beauty of this scene.  The beautiful Steinway & Sons piano stands on a polished hard wood floor with a view of Hooper Street and old town through the three windows above.  The brass machinery of the piano is seen as a reflection on the opened lid.  Below you can see the rest of the ballroom with its classic chandelier in the center of the room.

The Green Room and the Wine Cellar

The King Hooper Mansion dates back to the early 1700's and has been meticulously cared for throughout the nearly 300 years of its existence.  It is now the home to the Marblehead Arts Association and the rooms are used to show member artists' works.  The photo above depicts how the wine cellar would have looked sometime in the 1700's with the window looking out toward the well cared for garden.  Below is one of the rooms on the second floor.  I was fortunate to have the chance to shoot it between showings and, therefore, bring out the beauty in the [...]

The Crank Room and Abbot’s Bell

In the eight months since this blog began, I have had a number of unique photo opportunities.  The Thursday I went up with 'the cranks' is right up near the top of those experiences.  We met in the lobby of Abbot hall and headed up an elevator then a set of ladders to the crank room.  Abbot's clock and bell are driven by two large, heavy counterweights that need to be raised once weekly in order to keep time.  It is the job of the cranks to rotate two wheels on this machine that serves to slowly raise those weights. [...]

Keep to the Left

This image was taken as I was exploring Abbot Hall a few weeks ago in hopes of shooting the now removed stained glass panels.  Made my way up to the balcony and was struck by the history of this location and that fading hand directing me to the left. Technical: Canon 50D and EF-S 10-22 lens.  6 exposure bracket.

From the Attic of Abbot Hall

Last week I decided to shoot the stained glass window at Abbot before it was removed for renovation.  Turns out I was a week late and will have to wait til Spring to take a picture of the restored glass.  While scouting out other shots, I befriended a caretaker of the building and was invited up to the attic for a rare view from the windows there.  We chatted for a bit as I shot out of two windows.  In this one, you can just make out the lighthouse in the harbor.  Unfortunately, the sky was a bright gray but [...]
