Summer Days on Little Harbor

The past few days have served as a very welcome reprieve from the cold and rainy Spring that didn't seem like it would ever end.  We finished off Sunday at Preston Beach and I returned home in the mood to share an image that would convey the feel of Summer Days in Marblehead. I found a few candidates but decided on this panorama captured in August 2015 that I've never shared.  When I arrived at the small boat yard at the end of Doaks Lane, I found this picture perfect scene before me.  I ended up making my way to [...]

Floating in Darkness

I've captured the small boat in First Harbor with its Christmas trees from many angles and in varying light but as soon as I purchased my drone, I knew of one angle that I couldn't wait to try.  In mid-December, I launched the Phantom 4 Pro near the Marblehead Lobster Company and took it to its limit of 400 feet before aiming the camera straight down on this grouping of boats.  With the light having faded, the small Christmas tree stood out among the boats floating in darkness.  I used my car's headlights to help light up the scene. *This [...]

Morning Fog at First Harbor

When I woke on Saturday, February 25th and spotted fog outside my window, I quickly pulled up the webcam at First Harbor and saw this view before me.  I quickly decided to skip coffee and ran out the door to capture the view of morning fog in First Harbor before the sun burned it away.  It was only much later that I realized the fog would win out against the fog for several hours but the scenes I captured on this morning in Marblehead more than made up for a delayed coffee and breakfast.

Burning Through the Fog at Little Harbor

One of my first stops on February 25th was Little Harbor and this was my favorite image taken from along Beacon Street.  The sun had burned through enough of the fog to allow sunlight to reflect on the still water of the harbor.  I composed this shot to include the lone boat moored in First Harbor along Fisherman's Beach and then lucked out when a seagull flew over Brown's Island.

First Harbor at Dawn

On a late October morning, I headed down to First Harbor in the hopes of capturing dawn break and some nice colors.  I drove up Orne Street to where it meets Beacon Street and parked in front of the Marblehead Lobster Company (now closed and awaiting a planned reopening).  As dawn broke, I was treated to soft light in the sky and calm waters in First Harbor to reflect the pinks and oranges.  As it happened, a single boat named Sea Nymph sat moored alone in the still waters. I composed this image to include Marblehead Light situated between Gerry [...]

Dawn on Little Harbor

This past weekend, I had an Allergy conference to attend in Boston.  That meant early morning wake ups and, on Saturday, I noted an incredible dawn from our house and quickly scanned the webcams in marblehead to find that the water had turned to a brilliant red display in one of the more impressive views of dawn on Little Harbor I had seen.  Unfortunately, all of this played out on my computer screen.  As Sunday's conference schedule was due to start a bit later, I decided to leave the house for Little Harbor and hoped for a nice repeat dawn [...]

Bertha under the Harvest Moon

My son and I went out to watch the Harvest Moon rise tonight over Marblehead.  I've shot the Harvest Moon several times and always favored a composition including the lighthouse.  Today, I decided to head down Beacon Street and shoot the full moon as it rose over Gerry Island, Childrens Island and boats moored in Little Harbor. Despite some haze at the horizon, the full Harvest Moon was a brilliant sight to behold.  I composed this image to include the working boat Bertha in the frame.  I've got a panorama of the full scene below.

Grounded on Fisherman’s Beach

Here is another image from my wanderings on Wednesday, March 2nd.  I shared an image from my last stop - Castle Rock - yesterday.  This image was from the middle of my journey chasing some great light after a rainstorm. I had been shooting at Doliber Cove under cloudy skies when the light finally broke through and I manage to get a few shots I was pleased with.  Having done so, I walked back to the car which was parked across the street from this spot.  My eyes quickly snagged on the bright orange boat grounded on Fisherman's Beach and I [...]

Waves Roll in to Little Harbor

While I've shared a few images from the night of February 21st, this spot is where I spent the majority of the evening.  It had been another of the 50+ degree days that seemed to fill most of this Winter and I had left for Fort Sewall to capture the sunset. On arriving at the Fort, I decided to walk to its far side and found wave after wave coming into Little Harbor between Fort Sewall and Gerry Island.  As it was low tide, rocks dotted the foreground below and one patch of ice clung to the rocks facing open [...]

Snow in Little Harbor

This is a very old image and actually precedes the start of Wednesdays in Marblehead which I created in August 2010.  We had moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and this was the first time I had captured Little Harbor after a snowfall.  The snow was heavy and wet allowing it to stick to the tree in the foreground as well as on Brown's Island. I've gone back to this spot several times over the past few years and have never seen the scene in this same way again.  That probably helps explain why, almost 6 years after starting this [...]
