Fall Reflections on Redd’s Pond

I mentioned in yesterday's post that it took me four visits to hit peak color at Waterside Cemetery. Well, each time, I would continue a look that took me along West Shore drive to Beacon Street and then past Doliber Cove to Norman Street where I would pass Redd's Pond. On the third visit, I found Redd's to be at peak color and with barely any wind to break up the fall reflections in the water. I decided to compose this shot to include all of Pond View and its full reflection while extending out to grab the bright red [...]

Peak Foliage on Hawthorne Avenue

I started Wednesdays in Marblehead twelve years ago and have tried to explore every part of this town but, two weeks ago, I happened upon a new spot on the back of Waterside Cemetery. I found this amazing composition with a tree's branches perfectly framing the view of gravestones and revisited this spot four times until I found peak color on Sunday. With the different shades of yellow and orange layered in the canopy and the side light casing long shadows from the gravestones, this may be my favorite fall view of Marblehead. If you look at this on a [...]

Under the Shade at Waterside

On Wednesday, I headed out to capture foliage at Waterside Cemetery and found several trees nearly at peak foliage. I tried to get as many compositions as I could knowing the wind and rain predicted might bring an early end to this leaf hunting season. Here red leaves lay under the shade of one of my favorite trees in town. I'm curious how it will look this weekend...

Foliage Moon

So this was my first shot at the Hunter's moon on Friday night when I thought it was full. With the moon rise timed to occur before the sun set, I was able to capture a pastel sky as well as some foliage bathed in sunset light. I was pretty happy with this image not realizing that, five minutes later, I would get a stronger composition aiming towards the Corinthian Yacht Club. Also, the fact that this wasn't actually a full moon (that would come the next night over Tinker's), took away from my initial excitement. Still, any chance to [...]

Seeing Red at Seaside Park

On Saturday, I found myself driving my daughter to Fen Yang and spotted a brilliant red glow to my right as we passed Seaside Park. I had decided to drive to Spray Avenue for the moonrise but had time so I circled back and parked to try to capture this maple tree at peak color. I found this angle from the base of the stairs at Our Lady, Star of the Sea across the street and waited for a break in the traffic to get this shot. There is another maple near the water fountain that I last captured at [...]

Masts Up

On Saturday, I had gone out to shoot the nearly full Hunter's moon rising over Marblehead Neck. I had arrived a bit early to my chosen spot and had time to explore other compositions as the sun dipped lower in the horizon. I realized the angle of the sun was lighting up the top of the masts on the sailboats at the mouth of the harbor and quickly composed this image to capture that last glow of light.

Tinkering with the Moon

Somehow I had convinced myself that the full Hunter's moon was last night and ran around to three different spots capturing the moon rising well before sunset. Then I realized this afternoon that the moon was only at 100% as of 4:55pm. With that in mind, I pulled out my app for predicting the moonrise and came up with two options - Childrens or Tinkers... I decided to check out Tinkers first which meant driving to Spray Avenue and bringing along my longest zoom lens. By taking advantage of the full 400mm length of the lens (and cropping a bit [...]

Landing the Moonrise (or A Last Minute Pivot)

I had a plan for tonight's full Hunter's moonrise after checking the expected location using an app. I figured that if I set up at Crocker Park, I would be able to shoot the moon coming up over the Corinthian Yacht Club and might luck out with some foliage in the park as a nice foreground element. Well, I was set up and waiting for the moon at 5:59pm when it rose a good distance away from where I had expected it! I decided to get a few shots from there as the sun was still illuminating the foreground boats [...]

Flying above Castle Rock

Finishing off the week with this bird's eye view of Castle Rock. I had my drone up for an engagement shoot and was trying out different angles when I found this interesting composition. The harsh lines of the granite leading to white surf and green-blue waters made for an interesting image and a new view of Castle Rock.
