Sliver of Sunrise

Last week, I awoke before dawn to capture the full Harvest moon setting and, as luck would have it, had 10 minutes to reach my next destination before the sun rose. I ended up at the State Street Landing where I was able to set up with my longest lens for the composition. As soon as I saw that sliver of sunrise, a smile spread across my face. I continued to shoot and adjust the composition as the full circle of the sun became clear with a red haze from recent wildfires out west. I shared the shot of the [...]

Townies – Taste the Rainbow

Yesterday, I shared an image captured from Riverhead beach focusing on the Town class boats with their vibrant hulls and the harbor beyond.  Prior to capturing the Townies from that angle, I had sought out this composition from Red Steps.  As vibrant as their hulls are, it's really hard to get a good angle on these boats from publicly accessible spots. When I posted, I also had forgotten the class of boats and a friend helpfully answered that they were Town class (or Townies) but that she and her daughters had taken to calling them Skittles due to their brightly [...]

Pop of Color in Marblehead Harbor

I've wanted to capture these boats with their brightly colored hulls set up in a line for some time now though I'm a bit embarrassed to admit that I don't know what type/class of boats they are... On this September afternoon when clouds filled the skies (and between deliveries of my 2023 Calendar), I stopped first at Riverhead Beach and then at Red Steps to try to find an angle to capture them. I'll share the Red Steps shot tomorrow but liked how the boats added a pop of color to Marblehead Harbor from this vantage point.

Moonset over the Harbor

In a month when I did not expect to shoot the moon once, I somehow managed to capture the Harvest moon twice at moonrise and once at moonset! Of these, the most planned out was the moonset on Saturday morning when I woke at 5:15 and drove across the causeway to Chandler Hovey Park. I had mapped out this spot as giving me the best composition with the setting full Harvest moon adjacent to Abbot Hall. I arrived to find two other photographers had similar ideas in mind and was awed by the deep orange/pumpkin color of the moon (likely [...]

The Sun Also Rises

I haven't been out to shoot a sunrise in what feels like forever and had actually woken at 5:15am on Saturday morning to shoot in the opposite direction to capture the full Harvest moon setting (that shot came out great - posting Monday morning). After shooting the moon from Chandler Hovey Park, I spotted the haze where the sun was due to rise and realized I had 10 minutes to find a new spot. I drove across the causeway at the the State Street Landing from where I found this composition with boats filling their moorings on a mid-September morning [...]

Football Moon

The full Harvest moon was slated to rise during the first Marblehead High School football game and I wasn't sure how I would be able to capture it. As luck would have it, the moon appeared during halftime and I quickly found this spot near the end zone lining up the full moon between the goal posts. Currently working on shots from the game. Watch for the Story when I'm done...

Folger Point Moon

Last night we embarked on the Finback out of Salem harbor to celebrate our amazing staff at Asthma and Allergy Affiliates (my full time job is as a physician there). I hadn't realized until earlier in the day that the moon would rise just as we motored out of Salem harbor so I came prepared with my new favorite lens and got to work trying to capture the nearly full moon from a moving boat. This was a tricky shot with constant adjustments to settings to compensate for the boat but, as we passed Folger Point, I lucked out with [...]

September on the Water

Another look at September from the To Be Posted folder - this time September 2nd, 2019. The only problem with revisiting these 'keepers' that never saw the light of day after so many years is forgetting the details of what drove me out to shoot at 7:30 at night. Looking at this image, I have to believe we had experienced a passing storm and I had hoped for a break in the clouds to create a rainbow facing towards Marblehead Light. Instead, I made do with the scene before me which was very calming with its soft blue light.
