Low Tide at Parker Lane

Summer may be nearing an end with school starting today but that doesn't mean that warm sunsets are done for the year... I decided to look 'forward' by checking my To Be Posted folder for images captured in September and found this one taken almost exactly one year ago on September 8, 2021. It was low tide when I stopped at the end of Parker Lane and made my way down to the 'beach' (not really a beach if it only appears at low enough tide). I took turns shooting with the sun in the frame and without and tried [...]

Summer Days at Chandler Hovey

In mid-July, we were invited for a short cruise out of the harbor and I lucked out with incredible cloud cover to allow me almost endless compositions. As we made our way out of the harbor, I set up this shot with Marblehead Light against a backdrop of cumulus clouds and lucked out with a lone boat (Flying Horse) crossing in front of Chandler Hovey Park. The end result of a sidelit lighthouse with beautiful clouds behind it brings to mind summer in Marblehead and I thought it fitting to share at the end of meteorologic summer today.

Crepuscular Sunset

On July 12th, I was fortunate to witness (and capture) a great sunset over Marblehead Harbor. This is the fourth image from that outing which began with golden light over the harbor and exploded into a pink-red glow. At this point, crepuscular rays formed with the sunlight pushing through clouds and being broken up into these rays of light. It was tough to decide how to frame the shot to showcase the incredible sky but not sacrifice the golden glow of Marblehead Harbor. Side Note: I started Wednesdays in Marblehead to share my images of this town. I was thrilled [...]

Showing Off the Town

My parents were visiting this weekend and, on Saturday, we jumped in the car with my daughter and headed out looking for something to shoot. We drove to Devereux Beach and struggled with the decision of which direction might bring a better show - west toward the setting sun or east where some clouds promised to reflect the golden light. We ended up driving across the causeway and onto the Neck then to Foster Street and a quick walk to the end of the pier at the Pleon. As it turned out, the light was far better towards the east [...]

The Golden Chestnut Tree

Today's image comes from a June sunset with another shot from this set now featured in the 2023 Marblehead Calendar (available for Pre-Order now at wednesdaysinmhd.com). After capturing that wider angle, I moved to get this tighter shot setting the chestnut tree in full bloom against Abbot Hall in the background with golden light filling the sky and the blossoms.

Hint of Blue Light

I had two favorite images from the second outing on August 7th and as a band of thunderstorms approached town. The first shot I shared became a quick favorite of mine and yours to take first place in the voting to represent August in the 2023 Marblehead Calendar. This shot was captured just a few minutes later and, while not as impressive with the golden light of sunset, has a really cool hint of blue light in the top of the frame. I'm guessing lighting was firing above the cloud to give off that blue light and I made a [...]

Watching the Boats Come In

August 7th was a really hot day in Marblehead and I had decided to chase these cumulus clouds out to Chandler Hovey Park.  I walked out of my air conditioned car and almost immediately turned back but then forced myself to explore photo options. It was near the edge of the park that I was able to compose a shot to include the beautiful cloud cover while keeping Marblehead Light at the edge of the frame. Between the brown grass and the view of people sitting under the shade of the structure, I think the temperature of this day can [...]

Inner Harbor Sunset

Back to sharing images of Marblehead after last week's talk of Kickstarter and the new 2023 Calendar. As a quick update, the Kickstarter seems to have plateaued. I think there are many reasons for that but will let the campaign run its course and see where it ends up. In FAR better news, I should get my calendar proof later today and will share it when it arrives. PreOrders are open on my website now at the price of $19.95 (scroll halfway down the homepage) and will be available directly on Facebook/Instagram when the calendars arrive but will be at [...]

A New Wednesdays in Marblehead Book is Coming (with your help)

Yesterday was the 12 year anniversary of Wednesdays in Marblehead and, as luck would have it, my new Kickstarter campaign was approved earlier than excpected - https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/marblehead/wednesdays-in-marblehead-seasons-of-change-0 In February 2014, I had first turned to Kickstarter in order to help fund the printing of my first hardcover coffee table book. That campaign was filled with excitement and exceeded all of my expectations leading to a first printing of 1,500 books. A few years later, I ordered a second printing and am just 12 books away from having sold out. In 2019, I considered a second book but ended up deciding [...]

Harbor Lights

On Thursday, August 11th, I headed out to Crocker Park to capture the last supermoon of the year. I had plotted out the sturgeon moon's rise just to the left of the Eastern Yacht Club from this spot and decided to shoot from the benches on the small hill at the park to gain a bit of extra elevation and help separate the boats in the harbor.  This was a tough shot to get and required a wide open aperture to capture enough light for the final image. As it turned out, I am currently working on my 2023 Marblehead [...]
