Summer Days on the Harbor

Another image from my chase of cumulus clouds on a 99 degree summer day on the harbor. I had left Castle Rock and headed to Chandler Hovey before circulating back down to Foster Street. From here I knew I could capture a number of compositions looking across the harbor toward Abbot Hall but also towards the mouth of the harbor. When I spotted the launch for the Eastern Yacht Club idling, I knew I would start with this shot angling to get the Corinthian Yacht Club and Marblehead Light in the background. Sunset on the Harbor

I've shared two previous images from this outing that were instant favorites including that huge rainbow from Front Street and a vibrant sunset behind Marblehead Light. As such, this shot from July 2nd was placed in the 'to be posted' folder until today. The view from Chandler Hovey Park is awesome but, in order to take it all in with a camera, one needs to go wide. Summer Days at Castle Rock

Before the storm came through on Sunday night, I had gone out on a hot and humid summer day to capture views of Marblehead with cumulus clouds overhead. Stormy Weather

This is definitely not the image I had in mind as I drove across the causeway ahead of an incoming storm. The darkening skies at 7pm made me check the radar and I spotted a large cell headed our way. Starting to Set

A nice comparison to Tuesday's image is this one captured from the Boston Yacht Club on July 14th as the sun was starting to set over Marblehead Harbor. As opposed to Tuesday's tight crop at 224mm causing the boats to appear stacked, this one taken at a very wide 28mm sets them further apart. Moored in Mid-Harbor

This is another from our outing on July 14th aboard a boat heading out (and quickly back into) the harbor. As we made our way through mid-harbor, I spotted this view of Abbot Hall framed by beautiful sailboats and backlit by a dramatic sky. I had a few seconds to compose and shoot this but between the spacing of the boats and the soft light reflected in the harbor water, it was a fast favorite.

Old Town and the Harbor

One of my all time favorite images was captured in 2014 from atop St Michael's new steeple looking down onto Hooper Street and the close proximity of Marblehead Harbor. Eight years a a few blocks over, I captured this image from atop the Grace Community Church on a late June morning. The view is both similar and very different with similar houses and the close harbor beyond historic downtown (or Old Town) Marblehead. While I still love that shot from 2014, this was a fun one to capture.

Stacked Boats and Marblehead Light

On June 13th, I headed to Crocker Park for the moonrise but arrived a bit early. The sky was clear which was perfect for capturing the moon close to the horizon but meant little in the way of interest for a bonus sunset shot. However, as the sun began to set, it cast a nice soft light on the stacked boats in the harbor and I found this simple composition with Marblehead Light centered in the top of the frame. Opening Act for the Fourth

On the Fourth of July, I had decided to set up along Fort Beach for the harbor illumination and fireworks show. I arrived with plenty of time to explore options along the rocks and made sure to race back up to Front Street as a subtle sunset formed between Fort Sewall and Marblehead Light. There was just enough water to reflect the pink hues. Unfortunately, this angle highlights the missing tree lost to a storm several years ago.

Ready to Launch

So 12 minutes after Monday's image of that golden sunset light, the sky had transformed into a pastel pink hue that was strongest in the opposite direction. I was standing on the float at the end of the Pleon Yacht Club from where I had a perfect angle on these two launch boats belonging to the Eastern. The boats were awaiting some members who were just out of the frame at this point and seemingly headed out to their boat to enjoy the light and warm temperatures on this summer evening.
