Moon Light

I knew this one was going to be tough. The biggest moon of the year (the proverbial supermoon) was due to rise 30 minutes after sunset. That's an eternity of lost light and would make for a very technically difficult shot but also made compositional options difficult. With the moon being so much brighter than anything around it, the foreground elements would end up lost short of some multi-exposure tricks. Then it dawned on me that Marblehead Light was still draped in led lights from the Independence Day holiday so I planned out my location at the edge of Fort [...]

Feast for the Eyes at the Neck Run Cafe

And now a visit back to that incredible sunset from June 27th. This night started with rainbows over the ocean and then I was greeted to this awesome display as I turned back to the car. I shot one image of the lifeguard chair and then moved over to compose this image of the Neck Run Cafe. My family has been known to make fun of me for some of my cheesier titles so this one is for them - 'Feast for the Eyes at the Neck Run Cafe'.

Lighthouse Sunset

On July 2nd, I had made my way to Chandler Hovey Park to capture a promising sunset. I shot from the edge of the park where the cliff faces Cove Beach and then turned towards my car as the light faded. As usual, I looked back one last time before calling it a night and saw this composition. I used my widest lens to take in the view of Marblehead Light, the flagpole and that weather battered tree while making sure to capture as much of the sky as possible. The lights around the lighthouse set up for the Independence [...]

Ring Around the Neck

Before the first volley of fireworks is launched overhead, Marblehead residents (with help from the Boy Scouts) light flares encircling the harbor. The red flares are perfectly balanced by the deep blues of the sky and water in this blue hour. This year, I captured the view around Chandler Hovey Park from across the harbor at Fort Beach. With it being low tide, I was able to make my way between rocks for a water level view of the boats waiting for the show and the lights reflected in the harbor.

Fire in the Hole

So this may be my favorite shot from Glover's Regiment firing of the new cannon at Fort Sewall on Independence Day in Marblehead. I had envisioned the shot I ended up sharing first - that of the cannon firing with Marblehead Light visible behind the fire and smoke. But after capture that image, and with the cannon being fired 13 times at noon, I had the opportunity to explore other angles and compositions. This one was captured from directly behind the cannon and I started firing off shots as soon as one member of the Regiment placed a flaming torch [...]

Gathered for the Show

So this was my other favorite from last night's Independence Day fireworks celebration in Marblehead. I had started off at Lovis Cove but then moved over to Fort Beach after 10 minutes as I knew people had gathered on the rocks there with it being low tide. I found over the years that some of my favorite images were those in which I included people who were watching the show and this year, that seemed all the more important. With the first fireworks in Marblehead since 2018, it was a joy to watch people gathered again to celebrate something as [...]

Fireworks over the Harbor

With this year's fireworks set to start at low tide, I had a few ideas in mind all centered around Front Street. I explored various spots including the rocks at Fort Beach but made a last minute decision to start shooting from Lovis Cave next to the Barnacle. The first volleys began as the flares from the harbor illumination were still burning brightly so I composed a wider shot to include the flares at Fort Sewall as well as those at Chandler Hovey Park. I lucked out with this image capturing the red explosion and the leading tail of the [...]

Fire for Independence

At noon on the Fourth of July, Glover's Regiment fired off the new cannon at Fort Sewall 13 times while reading the Declaration of Independence between volleys. It was a perfectly Marblehead moment and I was lucky to be able to capture the incredible plume of fire from several of the cannon shots. Photographer's note: I'm really glad they fired 13 times as this was maybe number 10. I had overexposed the first two and then there were several after that they were mostly smoke with a very small of fire. This and one other were the best exposed and [...]

Light Under the Rainbow

We started Saturday July 2nd with some rain and then had thunderstorms threaten but ended up veering to the south of us. I had gone out at 6pm hoping to capture some lightning but watches as the cells fell apart on radar. However, as rain formed and looked like it might clip Marblehead, I decided to head out once more - this time to Front Street. I arrived and could see rain in the distance behind Marblehead Light and the sun had appeared but there was no rainbow to be found. I waited and another shower hit after which I [...]

Marblehead Fireworks – Best Places to Watch the Best Show on the Fourth

After ten years of shooting the Marblehead fireworks display, I realized I haven't create a single page from which one could find the best places to watch what is easily the best show on the Fourth of July.  Below you will find photos from each of the major locations around Marblehead Harbor from which to watch the Independence day celebration that takes place each year on July 4th beginning with a harbor illumination beginning at around 9pm and the fireworks display at 9:15pm. Check the map at the bottom of the page for each location. [...]
