Thirteen Years of Wednesdays in Marblehead

Thirteen years ago, I shared my very first image of Marblehead on my new Wednesdays in Marblehead site. Since then, I have shared 3,000 images of this beautiful town. To celebrate, I made a mosaic which you can zoom into and see every one of those images on a single square celebratory image.   Sign Up for the Weekly Email Digest Email comes out Wednesdays at 11:00 am containing all images shared on Wednesdays in Marblehead in the previous 7 days [newsletter_signup_form id=1]

Rainbow in the Harbor

When the first few drops of rain fell this afternoon, I wasted no time in packing up my gear and heading out the door. I had missed an incredible rainbow a few weeks ago and wasn't going to let that happen again. I drove towards the State Street Landing and lucked out with a parking spot. Then it was a matter of waiting for the sun to poke through and figure out angles. I started off near the Marblehead Harbormaster office but quickly made my way back to the Landing and down to the water's edge to capture this rainbow [...]

Dolphin Dawn

We have been fortunate to be members of the Dolphin Yacht Club for several years and have enjoyed dinners and social events there. A few years ago, I was offered the opportunity to display some of my photographs in the club and always smile when I open the door and see one of my prints looking back at me. It dawned on me (sorry, couldn't resist the pun) at a recent party that the Dolphin would offer the perfect vantage point for capturing the dawn and sunrise over Marblehead Harbor. A few texts later, I was granted permission to shoot [...]

Seaside Moonrise

For the first time in what feels like forever, the full moon was set to rise and not clouds or rain threatened to get in the way. I had mapped out the projected location of the moon from several spots including Fort Sewall but decided earlier in the day on a completely different spot. As the sun set, I made my way up the grass hill of Seaside Park and to the backside where it faces the harbor. I found trees in the way so I descended to an open area of granite where I could set up and wait. [...]

Lightning, Sunset and a (nearly) missed Rainbow

That was a fun night!!! I had been watching the radar all afternoon wondering if I might have a chance at capturing lightning with yet another summer storm. As the storm approached, I made my way to Devereux Beach and lucked out with a few bolts there before packing up and heading to Fort Beach. I had been watching the radar and thought I might be able to get a large bolt over the harbor but never expected the shot I got. At that point, I headed home figuring the coming rain would ruin any chance of rainbows or sunsets. [...]

Sunset Illumination

As challenging as the fireworks show was to capture, my perch atop the Corinthian Yacht Club afforded me an unparalleled view of the harbor illumination. At its peak with red flares ringing the harbor, the low clouds/fog opened up just enough to let through a bit of sunset light. The end result was magical and, as it would turn out, the sunset illumination far surpassed the views during the fireworks show itself.

Fireworks in the Fog

Well, that was by far the most difficult fireworks show I have ever captured! I may have jinxed myself earlier in the night when I explained to friends that a big reason why I shoot the annual Fourth of July show is the challenge of capturing these moments. This year, I had come up with a great plan to shoot from atop the Corinthian Yacht Club. I had met with the general manager earlier in the week and scouted out some rooms with windows offering various vantage points. Tonight, I biked across the causeway and arrived early to set up [...]

Stars and Stripes on State Street

I headed out tonight to drop off my daughter at Crocker Park and was thankful I had thought to bring my camera (just in case). I took several photos of the sunset from Crocker before making my way to the car. Before I got in, I decided to glance up State Street and was thrilled to see #24 State with a huge American flag draped on its siding. The Stars and Stripes were perfectly lit by the lamp post and the hint of sunset color in the night sky made for a classic Fourth of July scene.

Above Cove Beach

Today's image comes from another stop from my Sunday drive around the Neck to capture cumulus clouds and the feel of summer in Marblehead. I had stopped at Chandler Hovey Park briefly to find a wedding about to begin and made my way instead to the public way at Cove Lane and then to the top of the steps leading down to the small beach.  This spot offers a great view of Chandler Hovey Park and Marblehead Light but felt just a bit empty on this late June afternoon with plenty of empty moorings at the mouth of the harbor. [...]
