Summer Glow (or who said you have to wait for sunset anyway?)

Well, we finally had a perfect summer day with sun, humidity and great cumulus clouds. I drove around the neck at 11am taking in the view of a rapidly filling harbor with blue skies and puffy white clouds before a quick lunch from Shubies.   At 5pm, I drove my daughter to the Corinthian and, as I crossed the causeway, I spotted a break in the distant storm clouds letting in a bit of light. The clouds shifted as I drove and were too far from Abbot Hall from my view on Corinthian Lane so I doubled back and stopped [...]

Flash of Light

This has been a tough month for photography with grey skies dominating and flat uninteresting light day after day. I had gone out for another storm in early June and was thrilled to capture my first lightning of the season. When the radar showed storm cells heading in our direction again last night, I made my way out to the Neck again.   I set up at Chandler Hovey Park for this expansive view of Marblehead harbor and had to guess at the direction of the storm and subsequent lightning. This was the third bolt of the storm and my [...]

First Strike

I was downright giddy when I first saw mention of possible thunderstorms tonight and made it out to this spot on Corinthian Lane to try to capture my first strike of the season. I had a radar app alternating with a lightning strike spotter app and, between them, tried to capture bolts as they appeared. I missed two great ones near Abbot Hall but managed to get this bolt (and a half) as it struck over a rapidly filling Marblehead harbor.

Red Sun over Marblehead Harbor

I bought a new photography related gadget and had gone out on Saturday night to test it out with the sunset cannon. The device worked fairly well but I had some more issues to work out so I headed out again with a plan to capture the Corinthian's cannon fire. As I crossed the causeway, I spotted a setting red sun in the rearview mirror and decided on a quick stop in front of the Eastern. I had a perfect spot from which to capture the setting sun and fired away as it made its way through cloud cover. At [...]

Full Moon at the Carnival

This one took some planning... I've captured many images of the Marblehead Carnival over the last 15 years but knew I had the chance for a unique shot this year with the anticipated full moon rising on the second night of the Junior class carnival. I spent quite a bit of time over the last two days scouting the anticipated path of the full moon and finding locations that would bring it within the frame of the ferris wheel. I arrived at Devereux an hour before sunset and did more planning, lens checks and waited. And waited. The moon was [...]

Dawn Reflections

One last image from Saturday morning's incredible dawn outing. I had been watching this one working boat move on its mooring and, when it hit a certain spot in its rotation, I spotted reflected light coming off the bow. I waited for the boat to go through its morning rotations once more and lucked out with this capture of nearly peak light in the sky and the reflections coming off the boat and water. The three empty moorings in the foreground perfectly broke up the pink-purple light. I'll relegate the last 3 keepers to my 'to be posted' archive so [...]

The Sun Also Rises

I warned you that I came away with 12 keepers from the incredible dawn on Saturday morning. Here are the next 4 in the series. These images capture the full spectrum from the first light at 5:11am to the sunrise at 5:38am. During that time, I shot from various spots along the stairs at Crocker Park leading to the float (which should be installed in a few more weeks).   I couldn't have asked for better light on this early spring morning as the colors helped me with a wide range of compositions. I hope you agree this image of [...]
