Old Betsy on Front Street

I went to sleep Sunday night hoping the snow wouldn't build up much more and would continue to fall with first light so I would have a chance to capture some new scenes of downtown Marblehead. Sure enough, I awoke to find the snow falling and headed out the door. I came home with five favorites from the morning and now have at least one shot to represent January in next year's calendar. Normally when I come home from an outing like this, I'll share an image daily and link that to Facebook/Instagram. After a few days, some will end [...]

Shining on Washington Street

I went to sleep Sunday night hoping the snow wouldn't build up much more and would continue to fall with first light so I would have a chance to capture some new scenes of downtown Marblehead. Round Old Town House

Another image from the To Be Posted archive focusing on more snow-filled winters. This aerial sunrise shot comes from the morning of January 8, 2017. I had been exploring downtown and shot towards Abbot Hall and the harbor before trying to find unique aerial shots such as this near top-down view over Old Town House. I liked how the black asphalt encircled Old Town House while the rays of golden light could be seen making their way up State Street and highlight the smoke rising from the chimney. It's shots like this that make me want to dig that old [...]

December Sunrise

As this winter progresses with little snow to capture, I thought I would turn to my 'to be posted' archive and share images that never saw the light of day as they were either beaten out by better light or came later in the season when I was tired of seeing snow. This image is of the former grouping having been captured on December 4, 2019 and after an early snowfall blanketed the town. I got up at the very leisurely 7am hour to capture this sunrise with boats in the foreground and the white snow reflecting the light in [...]

Epiphany Tree Burning in Marblehead

As has become a tradition since being brought back in 2016, discarded Christmas trees were gathered at Riverhead beach for the Epiphany tree burning. I showed up early and watched as the pile very slowly caught flare after several days of rain and a last minute change to more picturesque snow. Once the pile was properly engulfed, I got to work trying to capture new compositions from across the street and closer up. Here are my three favorites from the night.

Boat One on New Year’s Eve

I woke up this morning earlier than I expected and immediately checked the weather and cloud predictions to see if I might make up for the last few missed sunrises. All looked promising so I drove out to the State Street Landing and set up for what turned out to be a decent sunrise. I had a tough time finding a focal point as there are no boats in this part of the harbor but discovered the Harbormaster's Boat One with its bright colors perfectly suited the scene. Happy New Year everyone!  See you tomorrow at 7am for the New [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #1 Arctic Sunrise over Tinkers Island

Maybe one other first in a top 10 list - the top two entries both feature the same subject; Tinker's Island. As soon as I saw this scene and clicked the shutter, I knew it would end up being one of my favorites of the year. Captured on an arctic morning on January 15th, I had made my way to Devereux Beach hoping for a bit of sea smoke. Rather than shoot towards Marblehead Light, I thought this view would be more interesting. It truly was arctic this morning and I kept dashing back to the car as the sun [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #2 Tinkering with the Moon

Sometimes all the elements come together perfectly and the final shot ends up being as simple as pressing a shutter thanks to a lot of prep work and a bit of luck... Such was the case when the Hunter's moon rose over Tinker's Island on October 9th. I had planned out the rise of the full moon and had two locations in mind. This one at the end of Bass Rock Lane would offer the best chance for a larger-than-life moon thanks to the distance. With my longest lens on and pushed out to 400mm, I was able to compress [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #3 Fire for Independence

This is the first year in which I have had two sets of images captured on the same day make it into my top 10 list. On July 4th, I had made it out to Fort Sewall for the dedication of the newly renovated fort and to capture Glover's Regiment firing their new cannon. It was incredibly hot that day and I only had a few firings to make sure I had my settings dialed in correctly. As I quickly discovered, not every shot included a plume of fire as some were simple smoke shots. By the time the last [...]
