Top 10 of 2022 – #4 Gathered for the Show

I have been capturing images of Marblehead's annual fireworks show since moving here in May 2008 and, in that time, have found that my favorite images are those with people in the frame. While I have shot from both sides of the harbor, I had not yet been able to shoot at low tide from Fort Beach until this year. I ended up shooting from several locations on the Fourth of July but came back to Fort Beach for the finale and set up this composition making sure to include Marblehead Light and the edge of Fort Sewall as well [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #5 Golden Rainbow

So this is the image I was alluding to on Friday and one that still seems fake to me even though it really did look like this at Devereux Beach on the night of June 27th. I had driven here in the hopes of capturing a rainbow as a summer storm passed over Marblehead and, sure enough, a rainbow did form. That light though was completely unexpected and I kept working on this image to turn down the saturation while keeping the image faithful to the awesome light that a few of us were lucky to witness that night. For [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #6 Feast for the Eyes at the Neck Run Cafe

Some sunsets have to be seen to be believed and this image serves as the perfect cliffhanger to end the week as it foreshadows the insane shot that made it to #5 on my Top 10 of 2022 list. On June 27th, a rain storm passed over Marblehead and I raced to Devereux Beach in the hopes of capturing a rainbow. While I could envision a rainbow and maybe some nice color in the sky, what I experienced blew away any preconceived notions. The sky was simply insane that night and I hope some of you were outside to witness [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #7 Moonset over the Harbor

My seventh favorite image captured in 2022 comes from the morning of September 10th when I made my way to Chandler Hovey Park to capture the moon setting besides Abbot Hall. If memory serves, the deep orange color was due to a combination of the timing of sunrise but also some west coast fires that added particulate matter to the air. For the deep orange hue of the moon and the foreground of a crowded harbor, this quickly became a favorite and ended up as my seventh best image of 2022.

Top 10 of 2022 – #8 Peak Foliage on Hawthorne Avenue

I struggled with with fall image would end up in my top 10 and put it to a vote but still torn afterwards. There was a perfectly lit maple at Seaside and another maple at peak foliage from Waterside but this image kept pulling me back. In early October, I had driven down Cemetery Road past where I would normally stop to capture scenes in Waterside Cemetery. I found myself staring at this tree forming a perfect frame for the back side of the cemetery and became very excited about a new view to capture and share. I would end [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #9 Up Crowninshield Road

On November 6th, I headed out in the hopes of capturing the moon rising over Brown's Island but was met by unexpected cloud cover blocking any sign of the nearly full moon. As I watched, an incredible sunset began to form to the west and I considered leaving for a more comfortable location; one where I knew the compositional possibilities. But instead, I stayed and was treated to an unexpected sunset over Crowninshield Road. Since moving to Marblehead in 2008 and starting Wednesdays in Marblehead in 2010, I have never composed an image from this location facing toward Peaches Point. [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #10 Snow-Capped Sunset

My Top 10 of 2022 countdown begins with this image captured on January 8 and will continue weekdays until December 30th followed by the annual New Years Day slideshow of every image captured and shared in 2022. The final entry in a top 10 list is always the toughest. This year I recruited my kids to help narrow down the selection but found myself moving this one up to that tenth spot enough times that I had to include it. Captured at 4:28pm, there is just something about this image that keeps drawing me back to it. The soft pink [...]

Christmas Snow on First Harbor

After two inches of rain and a late night/early morning rescue of the small dory by its owner Tom, the temperatures cooled just enough for a some snow to beginning falling over First Harbor. I spotted the first flakes a little after 7:30am and headed out hoping to capture a view of the small boat with a Christmas tree surrounded by snow. I started off shooting from the far left edge with the dory against the ocean but found the snowflakes were lost against the grey sky. I shifted over (after getting my foot soaked!) and ended up atop the [...]

Snowing on State

I was really hoping to recreate this shot captured on December 9, 2017 with last night's storm but the timing proved too late and the amount too light to better this version. So, after 5 years of waiting in the To Be Posted folder, I give you 'Snowing on State'. While I found the snow too heavy when I arrived at State Street, it had been falling at the perfect rate for me to shoot Christmas at Sea which I first captured in 2017. Despite revisiting Little Harbor on an annual basis, I have yet to find such perfect conditions [...]

A Dusting on Brown’s

Continuing with December images of snow, here is an unpublished shot from December 10, 2017 featuring Brown's Island. As is the case for most of these images in the To Be Published folder, this was my third 'keeper' of the morning. I shared a wider shot taken one minute later that including golden light on the water and then another of that dory with a Christmas tree laden with snow. This one finally gets to see the light of day now...
