A Little Sunset Light
So this is the zoomed in view taken 30 seconds or so after yesterday's wider version. I still can't decide which I prefer...

The clouds continued to move on Sunday as I took in the scene at Grace Oliver Beach and I headed back up Crowninshield Road for this shot of Brown's Island and Marblehead Light. There was just enough fall color on Brown's to make it clear this image was captured in early November. I was torn between the wider shot you see here and a tighter one taken 25 seconds later that I'll share tomorrow. I really liked the few rocks in the foreground and the purple clouds that made it into this frame.
Well that was a fun morning! I mentioned in my other posts this week that I had gone out on Sunday to catch an early view of the nearly full beaver moon rising as I was unsure if I would have a chance to capture it in the days ahead. With a total lunar eclipse occurring as the moon set (and the sun rose) this morning, I made sure to plan ahead with predicted tracks and lighting and clouds. I had my gear ready to go and set an alarm for 5am in the hopes of getting to see and [...]
Continuing in the series of images captured on Sunday, November 6th while out to shoot the moonrise, here is a wider shot than yesterday's. The clouds had shifted and darkened So I moved closer to Grace Oliver Beach from my earlier spot up Crowninshield Road and zoomed out for this wider view that encompassed the beach, Peach's Point and Brown's Island. That sunset over the gap of water was the clincher though...
This was such a fun and unexpected outing that I wanted to share a bit about my thoughts leading up to and during this amazing shoot - this might be a bit long... So it is Sunday, November 5th and daylight savings time has just ended leading to what always feels like the longest day of the year. I had thought about shooting the moonrise in large part because the timing of the full moon on Tuesday night, while perfect in relation to sunset, would take place at 4:35pm while I was still at work. I hate most things about [...]
With today's high predicted to hit 70, I had to pull out images of summer from the to-be-posted archive. When I hit this batch of images captured from a friend's boat on a mid-July evening, I knew I had the perfect depiction of summer to accompany the warm up. Also a perfect night to catch high school football with the first preseason game taking place at Piper Field tonight at 7pm. Tickets must be purchased online in advance. Back to Waterside Cemetery for this shot taken under the shade of a maple tree with a sunstar captured at the edge of the frame. It's rare to get nice light and peak foliage so I made sure to exhaust the compositions at Waterside before heading off to the next location in town.
In what has quickly become a Halloween tradition, I woke before the sun rose this morning and drove down Pleasant Street to witness Tom Saltsman's latest creation. I arrived to find Meretseger, the Egyptian cobra goddess, resplendent in the morning light and with a carpet of yellow leaves at the base of her coiled body. I found this note posted: Meretseger - Egyptian Cobra-goddess Guarding and protecting the Valley of the Kings She who loves silence Come back and explore what lies within her coils: Sunday, Oct 30 - 3:00pm Monday, Oct 31 - 4:30pm Friday, Nov 4 - 4:30pm
I grew up in California and attended UC Berkeley (Cal) in the 1990s. I stayed in San Francisco for one year before attending medical school on the East coast and staying here ever since. I hadn't been back to San Francisco in 25 years but had an opportunity to fly out there for a few days and catch a Cal football game with my former roommate so I jumped at the chance. I only had a few days and, as a photographer at heart, that meant doing a lot of pre-planning for photography opportunities. I came up with a plan [...]
And back to Waterside where I found that huge maple tree had reached peak color just after capturing the view at Hawthorne Avenue. I've captured this tree from a few different angles but never from Cemetery Road as I did on Sunday afternoon. I had to get the camera between the iron bars and find just the right angle to capture the sunburst through the tree's branches. Between the leaves on the tree and those already fallen to the ground, it was a sea of red at Waterside on this sunny afternoon.
