Smoke-Filled Sunrise

What an incredible morning! So all week as predictions for a brutal cold snap kept coming in, I considered my options when it came to capturing sea smoke. This is by far my favorite scene to capture as it is one I have only seen in Marblehead (having been raised on the West coast). As a last minute surprise, my daughter told me that she wanted to join so, alarms set, we had a plan!   Woke at 6am and checked the outdoor temperature: -10F. We headed to Fort Beach where I was thrilled to see my work partner had [...]

Burning the Night Away

One of the more incredible dawns I have experienced took shape over Marblehead on Thursday, January 19 and I finally was able to get the 150 captures down to 7 keepers to process and share. As I did before, I'm going to share them as a group on social media and daily on my website. now the real dilemma - is January best represented by snow or one of these captures with unbelievable light??? A bit of backstory, I received an email a few months ago inviting me to shoot from the highest spot at Peach's Point. I was thrilled [...]

Top 10 of 2022 – #10 Snow-Capped Sunset

My Top 10 of 2022 countdown begins with this image captured on January 8 and will continue weekdays until December 30th followed by the annual New Years Day slideshow of every image captured and shared in 2022. The final entry in a top 10 list is always the toughest. This year I recruited my kids to help narrow down the selection but found myself moving this one up to that tenth spot enough times that I had to include it. Captured at 4:28pm, there is just something about this image that keeps drawing me back to it. The soft pink [...]

Christmas Snow on First Harbor

After two inches of rain and a late night/early morning rescue of the small dory by its owner Tom, the temperatures cooled just enough for a some snow to beginning falling over First Harbor. I spotted the first flakes a little after 7:30am and headed out hoping to capture a view of the small boat with a Christmas tree surrounded by snow. I started off shooting from the far left edge with the dory against the ocean but found the snowflakes were lost against the grey sky. I shifted over (after getting my foot soaked!) and ended up atop the [...]

Shining Bright

Another December image from the To Be Posted archive - this time with snow. Photos with snow seem most appropriate in late November and into December when they hold the promise of a new season but not yet the burden of shoveling. This one was captured on December 19. 2020 in an attempt to replicate a favorite shot from 2009 which I have not been able to match since that New Years Eve so many years ago... Here is that old favorite amongst my top ten of 2009 (visit my website to see the gallery). Speaking of which, I'll need [...]

Masts Up

On Saturday, I had gone out to shoot the nearly full Hunter's moon rising over Marblehead Neck. I had arrived a bit early to my chosen spot and had time to explore other compositions as the sun dipped lower in the horizon. I realized the angle of the sun was lighting up the top of the masts on the sailboats at the mouth of the harbor and quickly composed this image to capture that last glow of light.

Lighting up the Sunset

Turning to my 'to be posted' archive for the rest of the week and starting off with this image captured on July 2nd at 8:30pm. I had driven out to Chandler Hovey Park on this July 4th weekend and found I had the place much to myself for this capture of Marblehead Light adorned in string lights and backlit by a nice summer sunset.

Sailing by the Corinthian

I managed to catch one other sailboat during my outing on Tuesday afternoon. Exactly 20 seconds after capturing the sailboat crossing in front of Abbot Hall, I turned and caught this boat sailing by the Corinthian Yacht Club. Reminder: I will be at the Fall Fair in the Lee Mansion gardens on Saturday, October 1 from 10am to 2pm with my 2023 Marblehead Calendars available for purchase. There will be lots of vendors including Bent Water brewing so please stop by on what promises to be a beautiful fall day.
