Watching the Boats Pass By

I didn't get a chance to shoot the Halloween Race this year but happened upon this image in my 'to be published' folder and figured it would make for a good start to the day. I shot the race in October 2018 from along Foster Street and mostly tried capturing the boats with their colorful sails as they criss-crossed the harbor. When I spotted two men on a float talking and then stopping to watch the boats pass by, I quickly recomposed and included them in the final shot. Watching the Boats Pass

While I was capturing scenes of the annual Halloween Race in Marblehead harbor, I spotted a couple of spectators one pier over at the Pleon watching as well. I recomposed the shot I had been taking with boats crossing in front of Abbot Hall to include these two guys watching the boats pass. As luck would have it, the sun came out just as a trio of boats came into the frame and I captured this multilayered image.

Setting Sail

I don't recall the last time I captured an image intending to convert it to black and white. As I captured boats racing on Sunday inside Marblehead Harbor, I had to wait for the sun to poke through clouds. It illuminated both boats and the backdrop most of the time but, during one stretch, the light seemed focused on the boats while Abbot Hall was left in relative darkness under ominous clouds.
