I didn’t think I had much of a chance for shooting the moon tonight, let alone finally capturing a moonrise over Old Town House. I had gone out to capture Marblehead harbor using my drone and had decided to launch from Crocker Park for its unobstructed views and central location. I ended up flying for 35 minutes and got some nice shots before heading back to my car. I had spotted the full Sturgeon moon rising over the harbor but it had come up forty minutes before sunset and so had not projected much light by the time I had turned to go.
I had just put the drone away in the trunk when I received a text from my wife commenting on the beautiful orange moon. I hadn’t seen it from where I had parked on Darling Street and made a quick decision to grab my camera with the longest zoom and walk up to Mugford Street hoping the moon had risen high enough for a shot I have been eyeing for years.
I turned from Washington to Mumford and started walking taking turns looking over my shoulder. I had just about given up when I crossed Mechanic Street and saw the full moon cresting the roof line. I quickly set up to capture the moonrise over Old Town House when a bit of a breeze set the flag blowing and completed the image.
