We moved to Marblehead in 2008 and did not get to experience the Epiphany tree burning until this annual tradition returned a few years ago. The image of hundreds of Christmas trees being set aflame on January 6th with hundreds of people gathered around was awe inspiring and I’ve tried to capture it from various angles over the years.
This image comes from the 2017 Epiphany tree burning which I chose to view and capture from Redsteps on the corner of Cliff and Chestnut streets.
The 2018 tree burning has been postponed due to arctic cold and thus will take place this year on Monday, January 8, 2018 at 6pm on Riverhead Beach. Don’t miss it!
Edited to correct year…forgot it was 2018 (oops)
When my daughter lived in Kotzebue Alaska (way up in the tundra, a few miles north of the Arctic Circle) I sent her a calendar that had this picture on it. Her little class was so confused. They couldn’t understand why the trees didn’t just get put away.
That’s great Kathy
So fun! We like to put fireworks in the tree pile, and, boy, that really lights up the night!
What time?
6pm
Hope to go. Maybe Redsteps is the place to watch as have never watched from there.
It’s a good spot (less crowded) but a bit far. Don’t feel the warmth of the fire or the smell of it.
I know what you mean!
Wednesdays in Marblehead we didn’t feel the warmth close up, cause that fence!
It’s tonight ! (Hopefully)
Definitely!
Laura Presutti
