On Sunday, as the snow started to melt and the sun came out, I ventured out in search of more snowy scenes to capture. I decided to head out at high tide in hopes that the waves would still be churning from the Blizzard (now offshore). Unfortunately, the waters were very calm and so I kept driving and ended up at Grace Oliver Beach. As I drove down Beacon Street, I noticed that the fence was covered with melting icicles and I decided to stop and try to capture them.
I switched to my longest lens and zoomed out to 200mm to try to get the detail in the dripping globs of water before they fell away. I did not have a macro lens or extension tube with me to bring the focus even closer and therefore had to settle for this level of closeness. With the clear skies and a bright sun though, I decided to try to capture a sun star (or sunburst) in one of the water drops. It took a lot of attempts before I was finally happy with this shot. The simple white on blue makes for a pleasing scene and the lack of dirt helps immensely with keeping this simple. It might be a bit hard to see the sun star in the smaller view but it’s there on one of the icicles…
