For every vibrant sunrise and spectacular sunset that I share, there are an equal number of muted events such as last night at Chandler Hovey Park. I had noted the gathering clouds from my house at around 7pm and then saw the sun start shining through breaks in the clouds. I thought that the sky had about even odds of blowing up or fizzling out and decided to head out in hopes of the former.
I drove to the causeway from which I could better evaluate the sky and became less sure of those odds. The clouds had disappeared over Devereux Beach and were threatening to build and snuff out the light over the town. I drove on to Chandler Hovey Park anyway and found that the light really was on the way toward fizzling out. I also discovered that the bright red cover over Abbot Hall tower would serve to limit my compositions for the foreseeable future and force me to work harder for those compositions in the months to come.
As it turned out, the light over Marblehead Light wasn’t too bad and so I set about composing that scene instead. I noticed a gentleman waiting at the base of the lighthouse and waited for him to move. I shot a few sequences of this scene and then passed him in the parking lot and noticed his girlfriend with a large bouquet of flowers. As I looked through frames on returning home, I was pretty sure I saw the girl’s mother appear and then the couple standing at the base of the lighthouse. I didn’t catch a bent knee or other obvious signs but I have a feeling I captured a special moment for the young couple.
Just goes to show, you never know what might transpire on any given photo shoot.
