My 9th favorite photo taken in 2017 is this one of purple light and a perfect green reflection as a new day dawns in Marblehead. This image was captured on October 7th, 2017 at 6:24am during what would end up as a very long boating season in Marblehead. The warm summer with only one heat wave morphed into a warm and very pleasant fall. I was thankful for the warm conditions as sunrises began to take place later and even more so for the nearly filled harbor as I saw the light developing on this morning.
With the still conditions, Marblehead Light’s green beacon created a perfect green reflection on the water. The purple light of dawn bathed the rest of the harbor and created a beautiful scene. The dawn positively exploded a few minutes later but I still preferred this image for its burst of green color.
My original thoughts on this photo:
I hadn’t been out to shoot the dawn in a month and so, when I woke at 6am on Saturday morning, I decided to head out the door and see if luck might follow me to Crocker Park. I had quickly checked the location of the rising sun and decided that Crocker offered the potential for some nice side light to illuminate the boats still moored in the harbor. I lucked out with a parking spot along Front Street and walked up to the park.
I arrived to find still waters and some nice orange light beginning to show to the left of the lighthouse. I chose my spot and captured this image at 6:24am. I adjusted my aperture and iso so that I could use a not-too-slow shutter speed of 0.8 seconds – this helped capture the subtle ripples in the water and make sure all the boats were tack sharp.
The bright green beacon atop Marblehead Light reflects perfectly in the still waters as a new day dawns in Marblehead.
