blowing snow sunset

What an incredible weekend!  The Blizzard of 2013 rolled through and dumped snow continuously from Friday afternoon through most of Saturday.  I had decided to try my hand at a timelapse and set up my camera looking out our window at the street.  Using an intervalometer set to shoot at 5 minute intervals, I ended up with 228 images that combined to a 10 second synopsis of the storm.  I posted the result on my Facebook page and on this site over the weekend and the response was incredible.  I’ve never had anything truly ‘go viral’ before but this video did.  By Facebook’s metrics (and after 36 hours), it was seen by 66,240 people, ‘liked’ by 3,574, shared by 2,715 and 793 people left me a comment about how much they enjoyed it.  There are also a lot more ‘fans’ of the Facebook page and my work so I would like to welcome them.

On Saturday at 4pm, the driving ban was finally lifted so I headed out to try to capture scenes of Marblehead digging out from this once-in-a-decade storm.  I made my way around Old Town and have at least twelve images that are ‘waiting’ to be posted.  As the sun set, I made my way across the causeway and onto Ocean Avenue to try to capture the incredible light that was developing.  As I drove down Ocean Avenue, I witnessed the power of the storm with areas of fencing missing.  This also opened up compositions that I had never imagined before and I set to work with this scene.

The rocks drew my attention as did the Boston skyline in the distance.  I shot this as the sun set and a great orange-red glow filled the scene.  As I played with angles, gusts of winds started to push the snow across the field.  As the snow drifted, it caught the light and made a great scene absolutely incredible.  I shot in bursts to try to capture just the right moment and this was my favorite of the set.  You can see the wisps of snow in the foreground showing off that great reddish glow.  The waves are cresting beyond and wisps of water are being pushed along mimicking what is happening in the foreground.  Finally, there is that view of the Boston skyline in the distance that shows just how close we are to the city beyond.

There will be many more images to come and, for anyone who is new to the site, new photos are posted Monday through Friday at 7:30am with an evening re-share on the Facebook page whenever I remember.  Welcome and hope you like this and the many more photos to come.[/fusion_builder_column][/fusion_builder_row][/fusion_builder_container]
