I learned long ago that fog produces my favorite atmosphere with which to capture images of Marblehead.  Two of my black and white images of foggy scenes were awarded Best of Show at the Festival of Arts a few years ago and a write up in the Reporter at the time was titled ‘The Fog-tographer’.  And so, on Tuesday night when I looked out and saw hints of fog in the distance, I grabbed my camera bag and headed out toward the harbor.

I found myself in dense fog as I crossed the causeway and immediately pulled over on the Neck to double back and shoot some scenes including the lamp posts and from Riverhead beach.  From there, I drove towards Foster Street but found the fog had thinned out mid-harbor and quickly headed out toward Chandler Hovey Park.  For the next half hour I shot scene after scene from one spot along the ocean’s edge as the fog and backlighting provided by the setting sun produced the most incredible light I had witnessed in some time.

By the end of the night, I had more than a dozen favorite images – so many that I had to ask my wife to pick the first one to share.  This was her immediate pick and I have to admit it was a favorite of mine as well.

As the sun dipped to the tree line, it created a red haze diffused through the fog.  As that light formed, two boats came into Marblehead harbor sailing under the sunset.  I have many more images to share from this evening so stay tuned over the next few weeks.
