With temperatures stuck below freezing and another sunrise at single digits, I couldn’t pass up the chance to try out my new camera and lens. I had just received the Sony 100-400mm lens in the mail the night before and had been hoping for continued cold to shoot more scenes of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor.
When I woke and looked out at the cloud cover, I knew the conditions were right for an amazing dawn but also had to get ready for work. I watched the light explode this morning while getting ready but was able to finish in time for a quick drive down to Front Street. Once there, I found the promised sea smoke and got set up and shooting. The new zoom on the nearly new Sony camera made for a perfect match. I started off with a shot of a lobster boat disappearing into the smoke before focusing on Marblehead Light with its green beacon as the only colorful part of this scene.
The smoke was far stronger than yesterday thanks to the calmer winds and I managed about 20 minutes of shooting before running into the car and trying to stave off frostbite.
And to think ,when I was young I used to be out in a dory with my dad hunting and fishing in weather like this. Nothing says “fun” like beating the saltwater ice off the oars and gunnels…
I watched a lobster boat disappear into the smoke and couldn’t believe they were going out in these conditions.
Flapping the sail on the windsurfer to dislodge the coating of ice. Man, that got old quick …
Thank you for the smoke
