The latest storm to hit our shores made landfall on Thursday, March 7th and the forecasters were predicting huge waves and storm surges at high tide. Though I had to drop off my son at school and be at work by 9, I figured there was enough time to sneak out of the house at daybreak and try to capture some storm shots. I headed out at 6:30 as the tide peaked and drove down to Devereux Beach. I figured if the waves weren’t great there, I would keep going to Castle Rock or head up to the Barnacle.

When I arrived at Devereux Beach, I couldn’t believe my eyes.  Waves had crested the beach, passed the picnic area and were rolling across the parking lot to the steps at Lime Rickey’s.  I had never seen the ocean reach this far and quickly parked the car and headed out.  The wind nearly tore the car door off and I had to shield my camera with my coat as I crossed Ocean Avenue.  With my back to the wind, I started photographing the waves against the picnic area and wider shots of them cresting on the parking lot.  After spending some time working on that composition, I moved slightly and noticed that the waves had started to reach the causeway.  I recomposed and got this image as a wave crested above the causeway.  The sheer size and power of this wave was awesome and I would later feel another wave’s power when I moved closer to the causeway for another image.

This is the first image that I chose to work on from the brief session at Devereux beach yesterday morning.  I’ll post more next week.
