Yesterday began with fog then rain and stayed grey for much of the day.  As the sun began to dip lower in the sky, the clouds broke up and I thought there might be a chance for a decent sunset.  I had missed a few good ones lately so I made up my mind to head out.

I stopped at a number of locations including Rocket Landing off Village Street, Parker Lane on the Neck and a few other old favorites before circling back and stopping at Devereux Beach.  I looked up as I got out of the car and saw a great streak of clouds directly overhead just beginning to reflect the light of the setting sun.  I quickly changed to my widest lens and hopped up on the causeway to find a good spot.

I stood up there for a solid 20 minutes staring out at a muted sky and losing hope for a good show.  Along the way, I heard a few cars honking at me and waving out the window and a couple stopped by to chat with me in Hebrew having recently purchased two of my books and bringing them to Israel.  I told them that I was probably going to pack up as the sky wasn’t developing as I had hoped.  Not five minutes later, I took this shot.

I started to notice an odd brightening of the sky in my peripheral vision and looked around to find that the clouds over Marblehead Neck had coalesced and were starting to reflect the colors of the setting sun (now hidden behind a cloud bank).  As I figured out compositions, the sky grew more and more pink and the clouds continued to gather.  I had to time the shots to avoid people and cars showing up in the final image.  This was the peak of the evening’s light – not bad for a show I had just about given up on…
