So the title above ‘lightning strikes Marblehead Light’ may be a bit of creative license but when I saw this bolt and the image on the back of my camera’s monitor, I just about lost my mind. A bit about the shot:
What an incredible lightning storm we just had pass through town! I saw the sky darken as we finished dinner and ran out the door when I saw the radar image of the storm. I quickly decided that Front Street offered me the best view and wondered if I might get a lucky shot of a lightning strike behind the lighthouse.
The lightning was too close for me to feel safe outside so I setup the tripod on the passenger seat of my car and lowered the window. It took a bit of work but I managed to get this composition and started the tedious job of hitting the remote trigger over and over and over again while hoping to catch a good bolt.
I caught a huge bolt seeming to strike Chandler Hovey Park but had underestimated how much brighter the scene would get with the added flash. I adjusted my settings and resumed the process hoping for another lucky strike. This bolt came out of nowhere and could not have been placed any better than behind the edge of the park and near the lighthouse.
I couldn’t wait til morning to share this one…hope you feel the same.
That is amazing!
Thanks Joan. I literally yelled out when I saw this on the screen.
Wednesdays in Marblehead I can just imagine! Such intricacies in the bolt- nature is awesome
Also…I loved your description of your creative set up for the shot! Haha
Great shot!!!
I love the loops and swirls of the bolt
Thanks Pat. That does seem like a crazy amount of discharge up there. It was a 2 second exposure and the sky just lit up and turned this crazy purple color.
I heard the storm all the way over herevin Danvers. I wondered where it was.
Amazing!!
Thanks Linda
This is gorgeous
Thank you Sarah
Wow. That purple is amazing. I know you’re not much of a yeller, but I don’t blame you…
You know me too well Steve
And I ended up turning the purple down a bit as it didn’t look real straight out of the camera!
It is AMAZING!!!!!
Love this
Wow amazing

Alison Taylor ??
Amazing! It’s incredible to think that there’s so much energy and charge in the sky!
Sure is. I normally am not fazed by shooting a storm outside but this one seemed to have so much energy and was so close that I decided the car was a smarter choice.
Yes! Last night was really close too!
Awesome Eyal!
