As of today, the causeway is officially closed to pedestrians. With a fairly narrow sidewalk serving two way pedestrian traffic and the concerns for spreading coronavirus, the causeway will be closed until further notice. While I understand the concerns of those who will miss walking this great stretch of road that divides the Atlantic Ocean and our own Harbor, I completely support the decision to try to stem the tide of infection that is so easily transmitted. There has been at least one study of droplets and the effect of the slipstream formed from brisk walking, running or biking that suggests the potential for infection is larger than a 6 foot diameter – link: Social Distancing White Paper

This image was captured on July 5th 2016 when fog blanketed the harbor and causeway. I’ve shared countless images from this evening but not this one of a group walking along the causeway and a sole cyclist making his way along the road. Like the rest of you, I’ll be counting down the days until the curve has flattened, the threat of infection passes and we are once more free to wander along the causeway.
