This morning I was fortunate to witness and capture the most incredible display of sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor. I started shooting at 6:30am and clicked the shutter for the last time at 8:00am. During that time, I took more than 100 images and, only after coffee and a hot shower, did I finally go through them to find and process my favorites. I shared one image already but found that I had 13 favorite images of sea smoke from this morning and really wanted to show one wide view as well.
The relatively warm ocean was producing copious amounts of sea smoke but it wasn’t until the sun rose and offered its warm backlight that the scenes really took shape. This image was taken as the first rays of the rising sun illuminated the sea smoke in Marblehead Harbor and set a patch glowing in golden light. You can make out the subtle pink of sunrise in the clouds overhead (I’ll share more images with the sunrise color in the days to come). The combination of subtle pink, golden smoke and Marblehead Light made for one of my favorite images from this arctic morning.
