This is the first sunrise (and a Sunday sunrise to boot) of 2012 as seen from the steeple of the Old North Church. To understand how this image came to be, we have to go back a few weeks to the Bus Stop.
I had set up in front of the Bus Stop for the annual Christmas Walk through the graciousness of Kathy. It was there that I met Rhod Sharp and his wife who had stopped by to purchase a calendar. We spoke at length about Marblehead (we’re both relative newcomers – he in 2007; I arrived in 2008) and, when the topic switched to my rooftop series, he informed me he was the senior deacon at the Old North Church. We quickly decided to try to get together in the steeple for a sunrise shoot in the coming weeks.
Fast forward to December 31st when I noted that the weather was supposed to be perfect at sunrise on the first and emailed Rhod to see if the shoot was feasible. Turned out that it was and we met at the church at 6:30 and made our way up. When we got to the top, we realized there was too much condensation on the windows to manage any shots. Rhod, through a feat worthy of MacGyver was able to get us out on the balcony one floor down. We shot there for the next hour and this was the sunrise on that first Sunday of the year.
I have many more shots from this ‘rooftop’ to share over the coming weeks. For now, I hope you enjoy this first glance at 2012.
2011 was an incredible year during which this little, personal project really took off and was embraced by my new hometown of Marblehead. If this is any indication, I think 2012 will bring even more incredible opportunities to explore the beauty in this town.
