I drove around on Saturday trying to figure out this year’s foliage situation. The maples had turned early as usual and hadn’t put on much of a show. I had spotted some vibrant colors in spots in the past week but not as much as I hoped for. Knowing that peak foliage had taken place on October 17 last year, I figured I had a decent shot of finding some color. Well, I drove around for an hour and just about gave up.

Meanwhile, the clouds seemed to hold promise so when I got a text from a friend out shooting at Chandler Hovey, I made my way there. Odds for a strong sunset dropped quickly as the lower level clouds dominated the sky. I noted some decent color over Abbot Hall as I walked to the edge of Chandler Hovey Park but was far more interested in the small rocks in the foreground casting shadows on the water.  The break in soft golden light of the harbor was intriguing and I captured this image focused far more on the rock than the admittedly fairly nice sunset behind it.

As I drove home I thought to myself (not for the first time) that even a bad sunset in Marblehead is still a pretty damn nice thing to witness.
