I headed out last night in hopes of capturing a nice full moon rising over Marblehead harbor.  I had tried to decide where to shoot from and ended up at Lovis Cove with a borrowed super telephoto lens on a cloudless night.  While the sunset was nothing to write home about, the moon rise more than made up for it.  It took a little while for the full Sturgeon moon to make its way past the haze but, once it did, it made for quite a sight.

As I stood there shooting with traffic from The Barnacle coming out to say hi, I kept hearing people calling this a blue moon.  Now normally a blue moon is the name given to the second full moon in a month.  I happened to be on Facebook while waiting for the moon to move into another position and saw Matt Noyes (NECN Meteorologist) explaining that this moon fit the original criteria for a blue moon – the third of four full moons in a given season.

Whatever you call it, it sure made for a nice addition to an already beautiful harbor.
