Today is my 40th birthday.  In the past, I have made it a point to capture the sunrise on my birthday each year and I have ended up with some favorite images to start each new year of life.  This year with forecasts for cloudy skies on Wednesday morning and overcast conditions for today, I opted to shoot the sunrise a day early.

I started off intending to shoot from Hammond Park but it was closed off by a literal mountain of snow.  I was able to get close to the waters edge and found an incredible scene of a frozen Marblehead harbor.  I managed to capture a few shots from that location and then made my way to the Boston Yacht Club.

Getting to this location meant climbing another snowbank and setting up just as the sun rose.  The angle of light helped accentuate the intricate textures in the thin ice that had frozen Marblehead harbor – the likes of which I had never seen before.  I decided to compose this image to include the floating dock of the Boston Yacht Club now quite literally frozen in place.  The textured ice of the frozen Marblehead harbor served to reflect the early morning light and made for a great scene and start to a new year.
