By Thursday, March 7th, the storm was really starting to show off its power. I again headed out at high tide hoping to capture some of the ocean’s strength on camera. I previously shared an image taken at Devereux Beach of a wave cresting over the causeway (LINK if you missed it). After getting that shot, I headed over to Lovis Cove planning to shoot The Barnacle getting hit by waves.
I have captured some amazing waves hitting the Barnacle previously and was equally impressed by the ocean’s power on this day. However, after getting those images (I’ll share them at some point in the future), I crossed the small wall at Lovis Cove and faced this house set along the water on Front Street. I realized I had never photographed this house and had only rarely seen waves crash against it with the fury they usually reserve for the restaurant. That might be because it is set in a bit or the cove offers some protection. Whatever the case, those rules didn’t seem to apply on this day. I ducked out trying to time each wave and not get sprayed (too much) by the sea or debris. This shot was my favorite and I started off processing it in color.
There was something not quite right about the final image though and I went back to the drawing board. This time I decided to process it as a black and white so that the texture of the ocean took center stage rather than the color of the house and distant shores of the Neck. I was much happier with the final image. If you happen to know the owner of this particular house, please let them know ‘the old house and the sea’ features their home today.
