Keep it Local – Arnould Gallery and Framery

On the corner of Washington and Pleasant Street sits the Arnould Gallery and Framery.  This local institution has been displaying great works of art and helping the community with their framing needs since 1978.  Whether you need a new piece of art (that you can't find on this site) or a wonderful frame (for a piece you did find on this site), stop by and see what Gene has to offer. And while you're at it, come to the Marblehead Festival of Arts Auction on Saturday where Gene will be heading the live auction and where you can bid on [...]

Keep it Local – J Martin Furnishings

Is it Friday already?  Time to Keep it Local with a great consignment store that has awesome furniture and art pieces.  J Martin Furnishings offers a broad assortment of pieces including some furniture that my wife has had her eye on.  I was drawn to the huge windows in the setting of this clapboard sided house on Washington Street.  The tricky part was to try to minimize reflections (which I did with the help of a circular polarizer) and capture the shot without cars passing in front.  Make sure you head to Old Town this weekend to shop local.

Keep it Local – The Muffin Shop

Did you know the Muffin Shop is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year?  Located on Washington Street, the Muffin Shop serves...well...muffins.  But also has great breakfast and lunch options.  On a cold Winter day, the front windows fog up from the heat of baking and in the Summer, it's uncommon to see the bench out front empty.  Not only does the Muffin Shop have great food, they also serve to showcase local artists on their walls.  Stop in and enjoy the food and art. And after you've had your fill of muffin and coffee, walk it off by turning left [...]

Keep it Local – FL Woods

I've been to FL Woods on a number of occasions over the years and have always appreciated the store front but, until I took this image and got it ready to post, I didn't realize how much history lies behind that facade.  You can read the full history by following the link above but suffice it to say that Fred L Woods Jr started the company (out of his home) in 1938!  I'm guessing this is the oldest continuously operating business in Marblehead and definitely should be on your list of stores to hit this weekend as you...keep it local. [...]

Keep it Local – Scribe and Hip Baby Gear

With the lack of snow this Winter, I decided to head to Old Town and capture more images for my Keep it Local series.  I had gotten an image of Hip Baby gear earlier but was trying to find a good angle with which to capture Scribe next door.  I finally took a few steps back and found this composition showcasing the intersection with its flashing yellow light and the old buildings that house these relatively new businesses.  It was a nice juxtaposition of the old and new seen in the early light on these uncrowded streets. And if you [...]

Keep it Local – Georgie Living

Georgie Living is the retail home for Georgina Ryan, an interior designer, and offers 'casual elegance with award winning design and personal attention'.  On this particular morning, I was exploring Washington Street's stores before daylight savings and the end of the parking ban colluded to keep me from shooting these beautiful empty streets.  I tried a few angles to get in the building that houses Georgie Living and Scuppers next door but wasn't happy with any of the compositions.  When I got closer and noticed how neatly Old Town House and Abbot Hall lined up in the background, I knew [...]

Keep it Local – Hip Baby Gear

Did you know that Hip Baby Gear [FB page | Website] has been in their Old Town location since 2006?  This is such a great store for new and young families to find the best products for babies and little kids.  No need to read online reviews about strollers - just walk in, try them out and talk to a knowledgeable person...couldn't be easier!  Even if they weren't cool enough to post my flyer on their door, I would be thrilled to share this image of their store on Washington street.  Make sure you visit, stop to check out that [...]

Keep it Local – Tory’s Jewelry

On Valentine's day at approximately 4:40pm, I came to the realization that I had only gotten a card for my wife while I had treated myself to a new watch (the old one recently broke).  I jumped in the car and headed downtown making my way through Mahri, Shipshape and Tory's Jewelry.  I had never been inside Tory's place and immediately noticed the beautiful golden retriever that seemed to take up one quarter of the space inside.  She was very mellow and I took turns looking at the varied selections and patting her head.  Tory's has a very wide selection including some [...]

Keep it Local – Fred Finkel Silversmith

Just in time for the weekend, here is another Keep it Local entry.  I was walking in Old Town a few weeks ago and, for some reason, turned down Darling Street.  Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a purple door for what must have been the first time and then read what was written on the awning overhead - Fred Finkel Silversmith.  I composed this shot to include the path leading to the door and the light beyond. It was only later that I looked up Fred Finkel and found that he has been working in Marblehead [...]
