A wave comes ashore at sunset

After shooting my kids at this beach and while waiting for the blue moon to rise, I found myself with just enough time to explore my surroundings.  I was on the Goldthwait end of the beach and had two lenses with me.  I decided to see if my 100mm lens might make for some interesting seascapes when 'opened up' to its maximum aperture of f/2.  This allows the most amount of light in but also leads to a very shallow depth of field.  I bent down as low as I dared and shot wave after wave as they come to [...]

Bees Hard at Work

This image would likely scare a number of people (including a fair number of my patients).  As you can gather from this Sunflower Week, I'm a big fan of these flowers and the feeling they give that Summer has not yet ended.  For good or bad, my time spent shooting the flowers included waiting for bees to gather pollen and move away from the subject of my photo.  On a few occasions (such as the one above and the other below) I couldn't help but include the bee in the image. Sunflowers in Black and White

Yesterday's post was filled with the vibrant yellows, blues and greens that characterize the sunflower.  Today, I took the same images and converted them to black and white.  This removes the distraction of color and puts texture front and center.  Turns out that sunflowers offer a feast of textures for the eye to behold.  From the fine lines of the petals to the intricate design of their face, there is an incredible amount of detail to take in with these simple shots. Summer’s Last Breath…Sunflowers

I am not a 'flower-guy'.  I could care less about the flowers in our backyard or taking pictures of flowers...with two exceptions - cherry blossoms and sunflowers.  Having lived in Washington, DC, cherry blossoms will be forever linked with the start of Spring and the end of Winter.  Sunflowers, arriving at the end of August, make me feel that Summer still has a few days left...a few more nice warm bright days.
