Keep it Local – FL Woods

I've been to FL Woods on a number of occasions over the years and have always appreciated the store front but, until I took this image and got it ready to post, I didn't realize how much history lies behind that facade.  You can read the full history by following the link above but suffice it to say that Fred L Woods Jr started the company (out of his home) in 1938!  I'm guessing this is the oldest continuously operating business in Marblehead and definitely should be on your list of stores to hit this weekend as you...keep it local. [...]

Keep it Local – Georgie Living

Georgie Living is the retail home for Georgina Ryan, an interior designer, and offers 'casual elegance with award winning design and personal attention'.  On this particular morning, I was exploring Washington Street's stores before daylight savings and the end of the parking ban colluded to keep me from shooting these beautiful empty streets.  I tried a few angles to get in the building that houses Georgie Living and Scuppers next door but wasn't happy with any of the compositions.  When I got closer and noticed how neatly Old Town House and Abbot Hall lined up in the background, I knew [...]

From the Rooftops – Down to the Harbor

Here is another view from the apartment with a balcony on Washington Street.  As I mentioned once before, this was the place that started the Rooftop series...though I didn't realize it at the time.  I remember walking down Summer street one day and seeing this rooftop deck in front of me.  It took more than six months before I ended up there with a camera in hand and the view did not disappoint.  My 'Peeling Paint' photo is one of the rooftop series that are on display this month at the Hooper mansion.  Opening reception is this Sunday from 2-4pm.

Keep it Local – Hip Baby Gear

Did you know that Hip Baby Gear [FB page | Website] has been in their Old Town location since 2006?  This is such a great store for new and young families to find the best products for babies and little kids.  No need to read online reviews about strollers - just walk in, try them out and talk to a knowledgeable person...couldn't be easier!  Even if they weren't cool enough to post my flyer on their door, I would be thrilled to share this image of their store on Washington street.  Make sure you visit, stop to check out that [...]

Keep it Local – Tory’s Jewelry

On Valentine's day at approximately 4:40pm, I came to the realization that I had only gotten a card for my wife while I had treated myself to a new watch (the old one recently broke).  I jumped in the car and headed downtown making my way through Mahri, Shipshape and Tory's Jewelry.  I had never been inside Tory's place and immediately noticed the beautiful golden retriever that seemed to take up one quarter of the space inside.  She was very mellow and I took turns looking at the varied selections and patting her head.  Tory's has a very wide selection including some [...]

From the Rooftops – Washington Street and Abbot Hall

Back to Old North Church for another view of the sunrise from the rooftops.  This is one of a series of images taken on January 1st, 2012 as I welcomed the new year with Rhod Sharp on the cupola of the Old North Church.  I've shown views looking down Washington Street towards Little Harbor, Gerry Island and the Lighthouse previously.  This one looks back up toward Old Town and Abbot Hall.  The architecture of these old houses makes it easy for the eye to slowly walk up the street toward Abbot Hall in the distance.

From the Rooftops – Winding down Washington Street

I continue to explore frames captured on New Year's day from the top of Old North Church and wanted to share this one with you today.  This was taken very shortly after a landscape view that included the lighthouse.  In this portrait orientation, the houses and road become the focus rather than the other's all-encompassing scene.  I love how the road leads the eye past one and two hundred year old houses to Little Harbor in the distance.

Keep it Local – O’Ramas

Located at 148 Washington Street in old town, O'Ramas sells home linens, gifts and lingerie.  I was downtown looking for opportunities to photograph local stores when I noticed Abbot Hall reflected in O'Ramas window.  I had to time the shot just right to avoid cars reflecting in the windows and waited as shoppers walked down the street.  The end result was well worth it.

From the Rooftops – From the Top of Old North Church

The new year began for me on the top of Old North Church.  Once we made our way onto a balcony outside of the bell tower, I noted these decorative posts dotting the balcony.  The view reminded me of one seen from Notre Dame of gargoyles watching down over the city with the Eiffel tower in the distance.  Seeing Abbot Hall in the far right edge of the scene cemented that image and I sought to capture the image with that in mind.  I took another set of pictures without the post but preferred this composition.
