At the end of November, I was exploring the Five Corners section looking for businesses to feature on my Friday section. I looked up Washington Street toward Abbot Hall and quickly focused on this composition. I love the winding street leading the eye toward Abbot Hall. The store fronts - including Lee Antiques and Lucky Elephant lead the way and make for a great destination if you are dining in the area.
As many of you know, I was fortunate to start the new year perched near the top of the Old North Church shooting the first sun rise of the year. As excited as I was to capture a sunrise from this vantage point, I was even more excited for a fresh crop of 'from the rooftops' images. I consider this one of the trifecta of ultimate rooftops on my list (the others being Marblehead Lighthouse and the very top of Abbot Tower). I have had my eye on a particular rooftop since before this project began. It belongs to the apartment on 128 Washington Street and I had tried to contact the tenants there on a few occasions to see about shooting from this vantage point. I had nearly given up until I walked into Shipshape one day and was informed by the owner that the apartment was currently vacant. Old Town House was decorated with lights on its front and back entrances so I decided to head down and try to photograph the festive scene. With the sun setting at 4pm, however, I had a hard time getting a shot in as the light faded and cars zoomed by. I decided to make the most of the situation and lengthened the exposure time to capture the cars zooming around Old Town House. The headlights serve as a nice accent to the already picturesque scene. As I walked around town in November, I noted that Mahri's beautiful red door was opened as a result of the unusually warm weather. I had never noticed the large M that could be seen through the open door but really liked that composition and decided to return when the light was more favorable. It turned out that we had great light just a few hours later and I set up in front of the store to take this image. At the end of November, I visited Betty Breuhaus at her office on the third floor of the building that houses Mud Puddle Toys. I had the crazy idea to try to shoot from the roof of the building but that plan didn't quite make it to fruition. Instead, I peeked out one of Betty's windows and saw this amazing view below. On Small Business Saturday, we headed to Old Town and Washington Street for some local shopping. Along the way, I noticed this brand new store (it had opened the day prior) and ventured inside. It seems that Marblehead is now home to the flagship store for Atlantis and Cloudveil. Atlantis bills itself as a producer of weather gear made 'by sailors for sailors'. Cloudveil produces 'inspired mountain apparel'. If you are in the market for either or just in the neighborhood, stop in and welcome our newest business.
In the middle of September, I had the chance to walk around old town and enjoy an unseasonably warm day. I stopped at the corner of State and Washington street where I noticed the metal rooster adorning the front of the store She. I ventured inside for the first time and asked about the rooster while noting the incredible assortment of items for sale. I had my eye on this tree for weeks and kept waiting for it to finally reveal its full color. It cooperated very well by doing so on the first Wednesday in November. I tried to set up for this shot but had a car parked directly in front that obstructed my view. Just as I was about to give up, the car took off and I managed to snap this image during a short break in traffic. The Harbor Light Inn is a beautiful bed and breakfast on Washington Street in the heart of Old Town. I first entered this Inn after receiving an email from their manager asking if I would put together a slideshow of my photos of Marblehead to display during their breakfast. I was thrilled with the offer and set to work producing a DVD. When I delivered it, I was amazed by the beauty inside this Inn.
