Long exposure Tuesday brings us the second image in this new series and one that is hanging at the Hooper mansion this month. As I mentioned last week, I have sought new ways to capture the town of Marblehead and began with the Rooftop Thursday series. This Winter, I began to explore long exposure photography with the goal of creating beautiful black and white fine art images of our town.
Today’s image comes from the pier at Mooring Road. This was a 3 minute exposure – the camera was placed on a tripod, a timer set and I ran off the pier (to minimize any vibrations I might cause by moving during that time). After 180 seconds, the shutter closed and I went to work. This image was converted to black and white (digital SLR’s produce a color RAW file – or negative – which can be processed in a number of ways) and achieved the vision that I had in mind before stepping out my door that day. The long exposure calmed the ocean and brought dynamic movement to the sky – all while the pier remained still.
As I mentioned above, there is a 24″ x 24″ framed print of this image hanging at the Hooper mansion this month as part of my individual exhibit. Next week’s image is hanging beside it if you want a sneak peak…
definitely one of my favorites.
