Long Exposure

November Surf

Last night I decided to look through all images captured in November that were stuck in my 'to be posted' folder and rediscovered this shot captured on November 18, 2012. I had come away with a couple of keepers from this outing to Devereux Beach on a warm November evening but decided to go with another image over this long exposure shot at the time. I decided to reset and start over in processing this shot captured over 1/4 of a second with a small aperture to capture the movement of the November surf pulling back from shore into the [...]

Spinning Neon

This is my last image of the Marblehead Carnival for the year and one of my favorites. I had set up my tripod in front of the Round Up ride and was shooting frames of the midway as the sun set and the blue hour passed. I hadn't yet managed to capture the view of the neon lights of the rides fully showcasing their movement until the sky had fully darkened.  It took an 8 second exposure and some luck in having both rides moving to realized this shot. The long exposure meant that the mostly teenage crowd on the [...]

Milky Water and the Lights of the Causeway

It's 'Marblehead Causeway' week on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  Since we are firmly in 'stick season' in between the beauty of Winter and the warmth of Spring, I thought I would visit my 'to be posted' archive and decided to share five very different images of our causeway. Today's image comes from May 2012 and a time when I was exploring long exposure images and doing much more black and white work.  This one combined both having been shot on the Neck side of the causeway looking back toward Riverhead beach.  The 20 second exposure smoothed the water of the harbor [...]

Still Waters at Sunset

On Friday night, I headed out at sunset hoping to catch a beautiful sunset light up the evening sky.  Clouds had filled the sky as the day progressed but a small break near the horizon offered the chance for sunlight to shine through and set the clouds on fire. As luck would have it, the break in the clouds closed as the sun set and I had to make due with a more subdued blue light in the night sky.  As it happened, Marblehead Harbor was very calm and I decided to close down the aperture on the camera and [...]

Still Waters at Sunset in Marblehead

On Tuesday, October 14, I had decided to head out at sunset which seemed to hold the promise of a decent showing.  I spent much of my time between two docks along Marblehead Neck.  As the sun set and the color began to creep into the sky, I noted this composition of the Corinthian Yacht Club with Marblehead Light poking out behind it. The waters were calm but I made them more so with this 30 second exposure.  The addition of a circular polarizer helped bring out the reflections in the still waters at sunset in Marblehead.

The Lobster Shanty

The lobster shanties that line Fort Beach Way seem to offer a wealth of photographic opportunities.  This one in particular with its great lines has been begging to be photographed and yet the light never seemed right or there was too much clutter or not enough lobster traps to fit together as a solid composition. On this particular day, I headed out when I saw just enough cloud cover and hoped I would make it in time to catch some light at the right angle off the curved roof of this particular lobster shanty.  As it turned out, I couldn't [...]

The Iconic Beauty of Abbot Hall

One thing I have discovered over the past three years of sharing images of the Town of Marblehead is that there is incredible beauty to be found almost everywhere you look.  The downside to that beauty is that I tend to come away with a number of good images from each outing and the photos keep piling up.  As of this post, I have shared 715 images but I have 332 processed and just waiting to see the light of day.  Because of this, I have been posting on a daily basis (well, Monday through Friday) for almost two years [...]

Long Exposure – Clouds Over Devereux Beach

It has been a while since I've gone out to take a long exposure image and this Tuesday spot has been taken up by other images in the interim.  On Monday, July 15th, I found myself with an opportunity to do so once again and headed out in search of subjects.  I had an idea for a shoot at Devereux Beach and arrived there at 6pm to see if I could make it happen.  When I saw these soft wispy clouds hanging over the ocean, I changed my plan and decided to shoot over the water instead.  The three white [...]

Long Exposure – A Waterfall in Marblehead

It's been a while since I shared a long exposure image on what has become 'long exposure Tuesday' on this site.  In part, that is due to having not shot in a while.  In fact, today's image comes from almost exactly one year ago - June 17, 2012. Calling this a long exposure is a bit of a stretch considering the exposure time was really only 0.3 seconds.  However, the goal was to slow the shutter enough to essentially created the appearance of a waterfall in Marblehead.  I'm going to stop there and leave some mystery as to the location [...]

Long Exposure – Red Sky in Morning, Sailor Take Warning

This image has been waiting in the 'to be posted' folder since a birthday shoot on February 19th.  I had shared another image from that sunrise several months ago [CLICK HERE to view] but kept this long exposure one 'in the queue' until now. This long exposure image was taken 15 minutes before the other image (with that one showing the sun rising above Marblehead Neck).  In this one, I decided to focus on the intense color coming from the red sunrise and allow the water to smooth with the five second exposure time. As the title suggests, this image [...]
