Harris Street Cemetery

Top 10 of 2018 – #3 Under the Canopy at Harris Street

I've captured the cherry blossoms at Harris Street cemetery every year since we moved to Marblehead in 2008. The patch has had some great years and a few not so good ones. On the morning of April 27, I found picture perfect conditions and discovered a new composition using the arcing branch of the first tree to frame the two trees in the background. As a perennial favorite destination and for the discovery of a new composition, this view of the cherry blossoms under the canopy at Harris Street is my third favorite image of 2018.

Shining through the Blossoms

On April 27th, I returned to the Harris Street cemetery hoping that the rainfall from the day before had resulted in even more color being displayed than on my previous visits. Sure enough, the cherry blossoms were radiant in pinks and purples and I spent an hour before work exploring various compositions in the cemetery. One thing my prior gear had not been capable of capturing is a proper sun star. With my move to Sony, I made sure that at least one of my new lenses could do justice to this trick of the light created by closing down [...]

Under the Canopy at Harris Street

On the morning of April 27th, I arrived at the Harris Street cemetery to find the three cherry blossom trees at peak bloom and perfectly illuminated by the morning light. I spent the hour before work exploring angles and compositions to try to do some justice to the beautiful sight of these delicate pink flowers and the thoughts of spring that they immediately conjure. As I made my way out and toward the car, I grabbed my iPhone to share a quick view so others might stop and visit. When I did so, I spotted this composition and quickly switched [...]

Peak Cherry Blossoms in Marblehead

Spring has officially arrived in Marblehead with this display of peak cherry blossoms color at the Harris Street cemetery.  For those who are new to my site, I spent several years in Washington, DC before moving to Marblehead and quickly came to associate the peak of cherry blossoms with the arrival of spring.  Granted, that tends to occur in late March/early April down there but, nonetheless, I have been visiting and photographing the Harris Street cherry blossoms for several years now to help me mark the onset of spring in Marblehead. For the past few years, the three cherry blossom [...]

Remembering the Blossoms

This has to be the dreariest Spring to ever hit Marblehead as we have paid for the mild Winter with endless cold and rainy days.  The weather has played havoc with the flowering trees as most haven't even flowered or did after the leaves had already appeared.  The end result has been a dreary Spring and a collective wait for the warmth of Summer. If you have followed my site for any length of time, you'll know that Spring doesn't officially arrive in my mind until I can capture images of cherry blossoms.  This year may end up being a [...]

Cherry Blossoms Blooming in Marblehead

Those who have followed this site for a while will know that I have a small obsession with cherry blossom trees.  We lived in Washington, DC for 3 years while I completed my residency in Internal Medicine at Georgetown and, from that point on, Spring has been firmly tied to the peak of these trees. I found this patch of cherry blossoms in the Harris Street Cemetery several years ago and have tried to shoot them at peak each Spring.  This particular image was taken on April 28, 2015 - I wonder when the trees will peak this year...

Spring Arrives in Marblehead

After a very long Winter and slow start to Spring, the view of cherry blossoms in bloom at the Harris Street cemetery was a very welcome sight to behold.  Since living in Washington, DC, I've equated the start of Spring with the arrival of cherry blossoms.  When I found this collection of cherry blossom trees in Marblehead several years ago, it became my go-to location for capturing the beautiful trees and signaling that Spring had arrived in Marblehead. I had made a few passes down Harris Street to check the progress of the trees this year and, on Tuesday night, [...]

Up the Cherry Blossom Tree

If you have followed my site for at least the past year, you would know that cherry blossoms are forever tied with thoughts of Spring in my mind.  After a number of years spent living in Washington, DC, I don't feel that Spring has sprung until the cherry blossoms begin showing their pink flowers. In 2014, I found that my favorite patch of cherry blossoms at Harris Street cemetery had hit an incredible peak bloom and I captured the view over a span of several days.  In this image taken on April 25th, I decided to put the camera against [...]

Three Cherry Blossoms in Marblehead

Yesterday, I shared an image of the far right cherry blossom in full bloom at Harris Street cemetery and mentioned that this is my favorite crop of cherry blossoms in Marblehead.  After capturing that image, I sought out some new compositions that I had not captured the previous year.  This panorama is the result of five images taken in vertical orientation and stitched together.  The final image offers a wonderful perspective on the cherry blossoms and their location in the cemetery as well as offering unrivaled resolution. I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful sky to highlight the beauty [...]
