On the Fence

So if you haven't guess yet, this is officially Sunflower Week on Wednesdays in Marblehead.  The last two days featured macro images cropped to square format and with varying color and black and white treatment.  Today's image features a single sunflower along the fence and comes from my new favorite patch in town. As I mentioned previously, I'm not much of a flower photographer with the exception of cherry blossoms in the Spring and sunflowers at the end of Summer.  There's something about the sunflower which arrives at the end of August as the days begin to shorten that offers [...]

Sunflowers in Black and White

Yesterday's post was filled with the vibrant yellows, blues and greens that characterize the sunflower.  Today, I took the same images and converted them to black and white.  This removes the distraction of color and puts texture front and center.  Turns out that sunflowers offer a feast of textures for the eye to behold.  From the fine lines of the petals to the intricate design of their face, there is an incredible amount of detail to take in with these simple shots. So, which do you prefer...color or black and white?  Answer in the comment field below or on the [...]

Summer’s Last Breath…Sunflowers

I am not a 'flower-guy'.  I could care less about the flowers in our backyard or taking pictures of flowers...with two exceptions - cherry blossoms and sunflowers.  Having lived in Washington, DC, cherry blossoms will be forever linked with the start of Spring and the end of Winter.  Sunflowers, arriving at the end of August, make me feel that Summer still has a few days left...a few more nice warm bright days. I found a great sunflower patch last year and, with the wife and kids away Saturday, I set out to check its status.  I was overjoyed to see [...]

Trees Grow in Marblehead

I have been trying to find a good vantage point from which to photograph Abbot Hall on Front Street for some time.  The problem has been all of the overhead wires that crisscross that street.  Earlier this Spring, with these two trees in full bloom, I finally found the location and managed to capture this view. A bit of technical information for this one.  The image you see is a combination of two photos with focus points that vary between them.  I shot the trees in focus first and then quickly switched to Abbot hall.  I was shooting with a very long [...]

Spring in Marblehead – Flowers and Abbot Hall

From a recent trip on the Marblehead Neck comes this view of Spring flowers on Foster Street.  After photographing the sun over the expansive home on this street, I turned and noted this view of flowers with the harbor behind.  The composition was a bit tougher and involved me laying down on the grass and trying to capture the image in a contorted position.  Enjoy this and a few more views of Spring coming later in the week.

Flowers on the Neck

We had a run of perfect weather in mid April and I ventured out one day to explore flowers on the Neck.  As I drove down Foster Street, I noticed this beautiful house and the flowers that had sprung to life near the road.  I carefully setup to capture the flowers under a bring Spring sun with the house forming a great backdrop.  If you stare at this one long enough, you can just about feel that warm sun on your skin and smell the crisp Spring air.

Spring Comes to Marblehead

After living in Washington, DC for 4 years, Spring has only truly arrived when the Cherry Blossoms flower and show off their beauty.  I enlisted my viewers' help last year to find cherry blossom trees in town and had happened upon this one on Washington Street that quickly became my favorite tree in town.  On Saturday, when the gloomy clouds lifted and the sun shone brightly, I grabbed my camera and decided to drive around town to see if I could find any signs of Spring.  As I drove by this tree, I felt that familiar sense of satisfaction at [...]

The Sunflowers of West Shore Drive

There are two flowers that I have sought to capture in town since I began this site.  The first was the Cherry Blossom which I found on Washington Street.  The second was the sunflower.  I had racked my brain as to where I might find these symbols of Summer within the Town of Marblehead but was coming up empty.  On Wednesday, I picked up my daughter from camp and drove up West Shore Drive toward Crowninshield/Brown's Island as it was low tide.  As we passed Cemetery Road, I noticed an incredible patch of sunflowers on the left.  The light wasn't [...]
