Cloudy with a Chance of Moonrise

For the second night in a row, I headed out hoping to capture the full moon. Last night offered the better timing of the nearly full moon but, as luck would have it, dense clouds spoiled any view of the moon. I returned to the same spot tonight and set up with two cameras as I test out the Sony a7rII eyeing a possible switch from the Canon system I have been using for the past 12 years. Moored by Moonlight under the Harvest Moon

Long after the Harvest Moon rose, I stayed along Front Street and watched the moonlight grow brighter and move directly over Marblehead Light. The boats moored in the harbor were lined up perfectly from this spot and seemed to be bathed in golden moonlight emanating from the lighthouse itself as I chose to compose this image without the moon - focusing instead on its light reflected on the water. Expecting the Harvest Moon at Lovis Cove

I didn't have high hopes for tonight's Harvest Moon and am very glad that my expectations were proven very, very wrong. Vigilante under the Corn Moon

As the full Corn moon rose the other night, I had nearly endless compositions open to me by slightly adjusting my position and the zoom on my lens. Floating under the Light of the Moon

Tonight's moonrise was quite a sight to behold and I was thankful for a last minute decision to capture the full corn moon rising over the float at Crocker Park. I had originally planned to capture the moon from along Front Street but arrived to find a seemingly thick marine layer that I was sure would block the composition I had in mind. By the Light of the Moon at Pond View

This week seemed as good a time as any to share some photos of the moon in Marblehead that hadn't yet seen the light of day. Today's shot comes from September 2016 and the rise of the Harvest Moon behind Pond View at Redd's Pond. As the full moon rose, the lights at this red house all turned on and I was treated to a beautiful view of warm light shining over the still waters of the pond.

Night of the Eclipse

With a solar eclipse set to take place today (and with me having to work), I figured I could share an image of the lunar eclipse from September 2015. I had gone out on that night in the hopes of capturing the view of the Earth crossing between the sun and the moon thereby transforming the moon's color. Moonstruck at Chandler Hovey Park

I shared one image of the full Strawberry moon rising on June 9th as it cleared the slight haze at the horizon and shone low in the night sky. As the moon rose, I followed its trajectory until the lighthouse became moonstruck with the full moon perfectly backlighting the green beacon at the top of the structure. The light of the full moon had just started to cast a glow in the still waters of Marblehead Harbor and created a very different scene from that taken only 7 minutes previously. Tonight the full Strawberry minimoon rose over Chandler Hovey Park and I was ready to capture the year's smallest moon from across the harbor at Fort Sewall. I had set up with my camera on a tripod and brought along the drone wondering how a different perspective might work in shooting the moon. Moonrise Symmetry

The full moon rose last night and I had convinced myself that clouds would block any view of it only to catch a glimpse of it rising on the First Harbor webcam and lamenting my decision to bag it.
