Old North Church and the Vernal Worm Moon

On Wednesday morning, the super vernal worm moon was due to set under clear conditions and I had planned out a spot at Chandler Hovey Park from which to capture this image. I have many images of the full moon setting besides Abbot Hall but have only managed to capture the moonset beside Old North Church on two other occasions - and one was marred by clouds. Moon and Star

I mentioned yesterday that I had gone out on the morning of December 23rd hoping to catch the full cold moon setting. It took a bit of driving around the Neck on this morning to find the right vantage point but I ended up at the end of Harvard Street for this view. The full moon descended just between Grace Community Church and that star at State Street Landing. With the cloudless sky, I was fortunate to capture the moon fairly low in the sky with nicely defined craters.

Top 10 of 2018 – #10 Super Blue Blood Moon setting over Marblehead (by popular demand)

Moon in the Clouds

On March 31st, I headed out in the hopes of capturing the full blue moon setting over Abbot Hall. When I arrived at Corinthian Lane to shoot the moonset, I noted some haze and watches as the brilliant moon began to fade into the clouds. I shot the moon in the clouds just before the details of its face were lost. As luck would have it, the moon reappeared just before dipping below the horizon. I shared that shot the same day but saved this one until today.

The Setting Blue Moon

With relatively warm conditions and a very reasonable time for this morning's moonset, I couldn't pass up the chance to try capturing this month's setting blue moon. I had scouted a prime spot to be along Corinthian Lane and ran into another photographer there who had a similar idea. Super Blue Blood Moon setting over Marblehead

I couldn't pass up shooting a 'super blue blood moon' especially when conditions were perfect with forecast for clear skies this morning. The name comes from a unique combination of the moon's proximity to Earth (super), the second full moon in a month (blue) and a partial lunar eclipse (blood). Moon and Star over Marblehead

On Wednesday morning, I left the house at dawn with two goals in mind - capturing the setting full moon over Marblehead and a few images using my new Phantom drone. The Setting Moon and Abbot Hall

After capturing the supermoon rising against the lighthouse at Chandler Hovey Park, I returned home to check the weather forecast for the next morning with the hope of capturing the setting moon as well. I lucked out with clear conditions forecast for dawn but was concerned with the timing of moonset approximately 30 minutes before sunrise. With so little light in the morning sky, the relatively bright moon threatened to overwhelm any scene I chose.
