Old Town House Open for the Festival of Arts

It's the middle of March and far too cold outside so I went into the archive and pulled out this image from last Summer.  It's rare to have the Old Town House open its doors...let alone both of them.  But that was the case on a very warm late June day during the 2012 Marblehead Festival of Arts.  I had been at Old Town House to look at the photography works on this particular day when I noted the back doors were open.  I walked out the back and down the stairs and was happy that my camera was strapped [...]

Old Town House After the Blizzard

Though snow was due to fall in Marblehead this weekend, I was away at a conference and thus could not photography the aftermath (or help shovel out our driveway).  Instead, I decided to post this image from the Blizzard of 2013 in advance hoping that the weekend storm would pale in comparison.  As I mentioned before, I couldn't wait until the driving ban was lifted after the snow finished falling and set out for Old Town when the clock struck 4pm.  This was one of my first stops.  The roads were mostly cleared and I looked for ways to show [...]

From the Rooftops – From the Fire Escape of Old Town House

In July 2012, I took my son to visit the GAR museum on the second floor of the Old Town House.  It was a particularly warm day and the door leading out to the fire escape was propped open to let in whatever breeze might come.  I took a quick peak out there and was thrilled with the view.  The Festival of Art decorations still draped the windows and I took this image to capture the feel of a warm Summer day in Old Town.

Old Town House Blanketed in Snow

It seems like forever since we had just the right amount and type of snow (not to mention the timing of the fall).  This image from the morning of December 30th followed such a perfect snow storm.  The snow proved just wet enough to stick to trees and the wind died down to keep it there.  The snowfall amount wasn't excessive so that large piles didn't push onto the sidewalks and the salt was kept to a minimum.  It was in such perfect conditions that I found myself on this morning.  I first photographed State Street in what quickly became [...]

From the Rooftops – Out the Attic of Old Town House

Last week, I shared the story of climbing up the ladder to explore the nearly 300 year old attic of the Old Town House.  I had about 15 minutes to shoot from the two windows that looked out on Washington Street below and, with the traffic from the annual Christmas Walk, timing those shoots was very difficult.  This was another favorite image looking out of this great old window.

From the Rooftops – Looking Down Washington Street

On Saturday, after watching the Christmas Walk parade, my seven year old son begged me to take him to the GAR/Civil War museum on the second floor of the Old Town House.  We had been there before but I had heard this was the last weekend it would be open and so I agreed.  We walked up the steps and under a ladder before making our way through the exhibits.  As we got ready to leave, I couldn't help but ask why the ladder was up and the attic door open.  It was explained that they were beginning preparations for [...]

Red Leaves and Old Town House

Last Wednesday proved to be a perfect one for shooting Fall colors around town.  This was my second stop of the morning and I got to this position on Mugford Street at a little after 9.  The sun was climbing up in the sky and offered a great backlight to this tree that really highlighted the colors of the leaves.  I liked the juxtaposition of the Fall colors against the yellow backdrop of Old Town House still covered in the red, white and blue.

Keep it Local – Georgie Living

Georgie Living is the retail home for Georgina Ryan, an interior designer, and offers 'casual elegance with award winning design and personal attention'.  On this particular morning, I was exploring Washington Street's stores before daylight savings and the end of the parking ban colluded to keep me from shooting these beautiful empty streets.  I tried a few angles to get in the building that houses Georgie Living and Scuppers next door but wasn't happy with any of the compositions.  When I got closer and noticed how neatly Old Town House and Abbot Hall lined up in the background, I knew [...]

Lighting up Old Town House

Old Town House was decorated with lights on its front and back entrances so I decided to head down and try to photograph the festive scene.  With the sun setting at 4pm, however, I had a hard time getting a shot in as the light faded and cars zoomed by.  I decided to make the most of the situation and lengthened the exposure time to capture the cars zooming around Old Town House.  The headlights serve as a nice accent to the already picturesque scene. Rooftop Thursdays will return next week.  Just wanted to keep the holiday light them going [...]

From the Rooftops – Old Town House

In the middle of September, I visited Old Town House and the GAR museum.  It was a particularly warm day and they had the back door opened to bring in what breeze might come.  I asked if I could peak out the back and found this scene before me.  It was almost noon yet the sun was at a bit of an angle allowing for the great shadow and reflect light off the windows.  This vantage point offers a great view of The Bus Stop and its next door neighbor (which is further reflected in the near window).  These moments [...]
