Shadows on State Street

On Monday, in the middle of an incredibly hot Labor Day, I ventured out of the house having spied some clouds.  Shooting in the middle of the day can be difficult with harsh light and strong shadows. I decided to head to historic downtown Marblehead first and noticed the mid-days sun casting shadows on State Street. I watched the traffic and crossed into the middle of the street briefly to capture the view of these historic home leading towards the landing where a large flag was caught in a gust of wind. From this direction, the sky held few clouds [...]

Historic Downtown Marblehead

Prior to purchasing the Phantom 4 Pro drone, I could only achieve these types of views from select spots around town. One of them was Abbot Hall and I was fortunate to be allowed on the scaffolding during the work to restore it a few years ago. Even with the freedom of the scaffolding, I still didn't have the freedom to compose as I do with this aerial camera and had missed out on these types of view. Historic downtown Marblehead (Old Town to some) is a treasure of architecture, locally owned stores, historic homes dating back hundreds of years [...]

Sunset Light over State Street

As the calendar inches closer to June, I took a peak forward at images taken in past Junes. I quickly settled on this image of sunset light over State Street to share today from my 'to be published' folder. I remember going out that night in hopes of good light and deciding to hang out at State Street rather than crossing the causeway to shoot back from the Neck. I was rewarded with a long sunset that arrived in the perfect location in the evening sky. The sunset light added a soft glow to the houses that make up State [...]

Spring Evening over Marblehead

Yesterday, I shared a close up image of the cherry blossoms at Harris Street cemetery.  Only a few minutes earlier, I had been flying my drone overhead exploring vantage points and compositions to showcase the first hint of flowering trees on this spring evening over Marblehead. I flew the Phantom 4 Pro inside the cemetery at 10-20 feet above the ground and then explored at 50, 100 and finally 200 feet up in the air.  It was from this spot that I was able to highlight the pink flowers of the cherry blossoms as the first sign of spring.  I [...]

Snowy Branches over Old Town House

With snow falling yesterday, I figured the window for sharing images of snow was extended for just a bit longer. Today's image wasn't taken during the April snowfall but rather on December 10th - back when snow was something to be admired. I had driven to downtown Marblehead after a picture perfect snow fall created snowy branches throughout the town. I parked in the small lot across from Old Town House and took note of these snow lined branches perfectly framing this view of Washington Street.

First Light after the Storm

This morning's image is not from the latest Nor'Easter to drop snow on Marblehead but rather the last (or third) Nor'Easter of the season. I previously shared an image of Abbot Hall captured by the drone with its clock face caked in snow.  After flying around Abbot, I descended a bit and explored vantage points from above Washington Street in the first light of day. As painful as it is to have to deal with snow on the last days of winter as in this image or the first few days of spring (this morning), I have to admit a [...]

Looking Down on Historic Downtown Marblehead

As I flew over historic downtown Marblehead on the Wednesday morning after a blizzard, I couldn't help but stop at the intersection of Washington and Hooper to take in the view.  I had an image of St Michaels steeple in mind from this intersection but, with a slight adjustment, was able to take in the Lee Mansion, St Michaels, Grace and numerous examples of classic architecture from this one spot in the sky. The gentle curve of Washington Street and the stark contrast between the black asphalt of the road and undisturbed snow from the blizzard made for a perfect [...]

Blanket of Snow around Old Town House

Here it is - the last new image I will share in 2017.  Next week, I plan on doing my top 10 of 2017 countdown culminating with the annual New Years Day slideshow looking back at all 169 images of Marblehead that I've shared in the past year. Today's image was one of the last I took on Sunday morning as I went from one area in town to another capturing images after the first snowfall of the season.  There's something magical about that first snow and this year's was no exception with sticky snow and little wind leading to [...]

First Light on State Street

On Sunday, I headed out after the first snowfall of the season and made my way from Little Harbor to Grace Oliver Beach and then Redd's Pond before heading to historic downtown Marblehead.  I shot a few frames of Old Town House and then walked down State Street to explore some new compositions. I ended up about halfway down the street eyeing this lonely lit street lamp the entire time.  I knew I wanted to make that a focal point of the image and then found the right position to include the gently curve in the street, the pure white [...]

Abbot Hall and Historic Downtown Marblehead

Today's image came about as a lucky accident as I had another image in mind when I launched the drone over historic downtown Marblehead.  Taking care to keep vertical over the launch area and keep the drone in site the entire time, I found Abbot Hall quite literally shining below me with all of 'Old Town' spread out beyond. I could not have asked for better light and lucked out with the angle of the late Summer sun shining on the red brick facade of this beautiful building.
