Sunset After the Storm at Crocker Park

Once in a while, a snow storm departs just as the sun begins to set leading to perfect conditions and incredible light.  Such was the case on this day one year ago - February 10, 2015 - when one of the countless storms departed as the sun began to set. I was at Crocker Park shooting a favorite composition of Abbot Hall when I turned and saw the golden light spread over Marblehead Neck.  I quickly changed position and composed this image including the barren branches of a tree to help frame the final scene. I haven't had a chance [...]

A Blanket of Snow in Historic Downtown Marblehead

After a week of sun and warm temperatures in the Turks and Caicos, my family and I returned to the tail end of a beautiful snowfall and near blizzard conditions yesterday.  While the snow from Friday was the perfect consistency to stick to trees and the sunset that followed was amazing, I was several thousand feet up in the air while all that took place.  Yesterday's fluffy snow blew too hard and the light never materialized for an outing. Instead, I turned to the archive and realized that this image was taken exactly three years ago - February 9, 2013.  Another [...]

Snow in Little Harbor

This is a very old image and actually precedes the start of Wednesdays in Marblehead which I created in August 2010.  We had moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and this was the first time I had captured Little Harbor after a snowfall.  The snow was heavy and wet allowing it to stick to the tree in the foreground as well as on Brown's Island. I've gone back to this spot several times over the past few years and have never seen the scene in this same way again.  That probably helps explain why, almost 6 years after starting this [...]

Snowy Sunrise at Castle Rock

I've made it a point the last few years to go out on the morning of my birthday to capture the sunrise.  As I was born in mid-February, that means I have a pretty good chance of capturing a snow filled scene.  Such was the case in 2014. On February 19, I headed out with a plan to capture a snowy sunrise at Castle Rock.  It had snowed the night before and I hoped the snow would remain undisturbed for my morning shoot.  I was thrilled to see this blanket of snow at Castle Rock as well as the almost [...]

A Snow Lined Road to Gerry Island

This image of a snow lined road leading to Gerry Island comes from another January snow storm - this time January 16, 2013.  Again, a morning snow storm allowed me to go out and capture the falling snow at a few locations around town.  When I realized it was low tide, I made it a point to head to Gerry Island hoping for this composition. The road to Gerry Island appears at low tide but capturing snow on the path requires the snow storm to have minimal wind and waves.  Such was not the case for the storm that just [...]

State Street in the Snow

With snow finally on the ground, it felt appropriate to revisit some images of snow in my archive.  The timing of this last snow fall and its strong winds followed by clear blue skies did not make for great photographic opportunities.  Luckily, I have a fair number of snow shots from past outings that I've wanted to share. This image of State Street in the snow comes from January 24, 2015.  This was an early and mild snow storm that preceded the deluge that would be the Winter of 2015.  The timing of this snow fall on a Saturday morning allowed [...]

A Dusting of Snow around Old Town House

I decided to look in my too-be-published archive for images of snow to share this morning and happened upon this image of Old Town House.  The image was taken on January 24, 2015 at 7:50am (right before I walked down to State Street and captured the Winter Wonderland image that represents January in this year's calendar). I tried a few angles on Old Town House with fresh snow falling around it and have shared a few already.  This vertical shot allowed me to include the tree branches above with snow sticking to the wood and adding a nice frame over [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Trodding Toward Sunset at Crocker Park

At #4 in the Top 10 of 2015 Countdown is the clearest view yet of the incredible snowfall that started off 2015.  By February 10 when this image was taken, Marblehead was well on its way to record breaking quantities of snow with a first (for me) of having to dump some of it into the harbor.  I had a feeling about conditions on this day and headed to Crocker Park just after 5pm to capture the sunset. With the white snow acting as a reflector of sunset's colors, I couldn't ask for better light to capture this familiar composition [...]

Top 10 of 2015 – Winter Wonderland

It's almost funny to look back on this image of State Street with falling snow captured on January 24, 2015.  Little did I know just how much snow would keep falling during the endless Winter of 2015.  At the time though, the timing of this snowfall (8:00am) allowed me to capture the falling flakes before plows began to clear the road and spread sand and salt to discolor the soft coat of white covering State Street. The conditions reminded me of those in which I captured a favorite image of Fort Sewall years ago.  With the natural beauty of the houses of [...]

Empty Streets in Historic Downtown – Parking Ban is in Effect

The Winter parking ban is in effect! I might be the only person in town (apart from the snowplow drivers) who actually gets excited about the annual Winter parking ban in Marblehead.  I realize it can be a major pain for those who live downtown with little access to parking but, apart from the safety benefits, it allows me to view and capture images of Marblehead that are truly timeless. It's amazing how easily a car or other modern item can cement a scene in a particular decade.  During the Winter parking ban, the streets remain devoid of any cars and [...]
