Just received a print order for one of my all time favorite images of sea smoke surrounding Marblehead Light and couldn't pass up a chance to remaster this shot from 2012. Here is the new version that I thought would be a perfect share as we face 90+ degree temperatures...again. 10 year retrospective coming tomorrow...
Most people who visit Chandler Hovey Park will spend their time around the lighthouse and benches but, if you walk past the old oil house to the edge of the park, you'll see this view of a not-so-secret beach and great harbor views.
The thing about aerial images is that you don't always need to fly 200 or 400 feet above the ground. I quickly learned that bringing the drone off shore and raised a bit off the water provided some incredible compositions as in this shot captured on July 26, 2017. Last Wednesday proved to be quite the outing and it began with a trip to Chandler Hovey Park in the hopes of capturing an oncoming storm. Before that storm would arrive, I spotted huge cumulus clouds behind Marblehead Light and grabbed this shot of the lighthouse backed by the intricate detail and patterns. The oncoming storm was a bust but the sunset more than made up for it.
I have had another image from this photoshoot hanging in my home office since I captured it on June 7, 2016. That image features the whole of the lighthouse reflected in the collected pool of water along the path leading to the iron structure. This one was taken 5 minutes later and I decided to change my position to better capture the beautiful sky behind Marblehead Light while choosing to reflect the tree rather than the lighthouse.

Sometimes as I go through my 'to be posted' archive, I come across an image and wonder why it didn't make the cut initially. In this case, I looked back and found that I had been playing with reflections of the lighthouse in a puddle of water from a recent rain and then later was treated to an even nicer sunset sky. B0th of those images were shared shortly after this outing on July 18, 2017 but this one stayed back. Finishing off this week's posts from 2011 to 2013 is this image of Chandler Hovey's rocky shore captured on December 18, 2011. I used a slightly slowed shutter speed of 1/6th of a second (on a tripod) to capture the motion in the churning waves
I was looking through my to-be-posted folder and stopped when I happened upon this shot of a foggy summer sunset at Chandler Hovey Park. With the clouds so high in the sky, I had switched to my wide angle lens and composed this image from near the parking lot. The effect of the distance and wide angle was to make Marblehead Light appear diminutive with so much empty space around it. I think it helped accentuate the feel of a foggy summer evening in Marblehead - can't wait for more of those...
On December 23rd, I headed out to capture the full cold moon rising over Chandler Hovey Park. When I arrived at my spot near the Dolphin Yacht Club, I immediately noticed the red, white and blue lights adorning Marblehead Light. I took a few practice shots to get ready for the moon rise but then had a great idea and made a few adjustments. Just before the moon came into view, its orange glow illuminated the horizon. I adjusted the camera to a very long exposure (25 seconds) which served to capture all of the light surrounding Marblehead Light and [...]
