Last Light on Old Town House

Today's image of Old Town House reflecting the last light of sunset comes from an outing on June 23rd.  I had gone out that day to try again for a shot of State Street at sunset (an attempt the night before proved fruitless) and was rewarded for my efforts with a brilliant sunset display in historic downtown Marblehead.  As I made my way back to my car parked on Washington Street, I spotted the pink glow of sunset reflecting in the windows of Old Town House.  It only took a moment to get the camera set up again before the [...]

Old Town House

The Old Town House was built in 1727 and served as the original town hall for the town of Marblehead, Massachusetts.  The building is constructed in a Georgian style and was designed by the architect Nathan Bowen.  The yellow building with its wood clapboard siding on a granite foundation stands in the middle of Washington Street with traffic circling around it. History of the Old Town House   Though the main floor was originally used as the town hall, it's lower level was used as a market initially.  When Abbot Hall was constructed in 1876, it assumed the role of town [...]

Old Town House Bathed in Gold

The Marblehead Festival of Arts is upon us and two of my prints are hanging up at the Old Town House this weekend.  I was honored to receive an Honorable Mention award for 'Lunar Eclipse and Abbot Hall'.  As in years past, the public gets to vote of their favorite image which is then awarded the Peoples Choice Award.  I would greatly appreciate your vote if you make it through the photography exhibit on Friday (2-7pm), Saturday (10-5pm) or Sunday (12-5pm). Today's image comes from that same sunset and incredible light show of last Thursday night.  In fact, this was [...]

Patriotism on State Street

One hour after capturing yesterday's view of Riverhead Beach from the causeway, I found myself walking down State Street which was bordered on both sides by incredible cloud formations.  I started off near Maddie's shooting up toward Washington Street as the sun set and set the sky ablaze in color.  As the sunset settled, I moved up the street looking for other views. I had noted an American flag on display on a house across the street and was thrilled when I found this one near the top of State Street.  I set up this composition to include the two [...]

State Street at Sunset

Five years ago, I captured an incredible sunset from this exact spot on State Street.  The sky exploded in bright pink colors that bathed the classic houses on this street and made the entire street come to life.  Ever since then, I've tried to recreate that image with varying levels of success. On Wednesday night, I headed out in hopes of capturing one of the many great sunsets that had been taking place in town over the past few weeks.  As luck would have it, clouds ended up blocking much of the sunlight and I ended up packing up without [...]

Lighting Up State Street

This image comes one week before yesterday's and a dawn outing on State Street.  The forecast for light clouds raised my hopes for a good sunrise and I set my alarm clock to try to take advantage of the conditions. I started off on State Street in the pre-dawn blue hour and found one house with holiday lights encircling the door.  I moved to the edge of the sidewalk for this image of the street winding toward the harbor and the shining star hanging overhead from a crane.

Light Up the Tree at St. Michael’s

Recently, I received an email asking me if I had the chance to photograph the tree in front of St. Michael's Church decorated in holiday lights.  While I had captured the trees at Abbot Hall and National Grand Bank in past Decembers, I had never noticed the tree at St. Michael's lit up for the season.  On Tuesday, I headed out before sunset hoping the clouds would break in time for me to capture a beautiful tree against an equally stunning sky.  I set up and waited, and waited but the tree never lit.  I captured a number of images of the [...]

A New Steeple on Washington Street

Okay so St. Michael's new steeple isn't technically on Washington Street.  Ever since it went up, I have wanted to capture an image of the new steeple rising above the shops and houses lining Washington Street.  I finally had a chance on Saturday morning under perfect conditions.  You can make out the light of dawn reflecting in the windows facing East.

State Street Sunrise

Just like Monday's image of Mud Puddle Toys, this image comes 5 years after a very similar one.  I had captured the sunset over State Street in November 2010 and always meant to return for the sunrise view.  The position of the sunrise is such that it occurs at the base of State Street during the Winter and it seemed like I would get a perfect complement to that image with a sunrise version.  For whatever reason, I hadn't captured State Street at sunrise until Saturday morning. I began shooting on this morning along Washington Street before heading to State [...]

Historic Downtown Marblehead – Don’t Tread on Tucker Street

Continuing with Saturday's exploration of historic downtown Marblehead during the Winter parking ban, this is the view of Tucker Street looking up from Hooper Street. I had passed this street a number of times over the Summer and kept thinking it would make for a nice image and new vantage point of Abbot Hall.  As I walked around on this morning, I found the light to be just about perfect for finally capturing this image. The title comes from the two versions of the Gadsden flag flying on either side of Tucker Street.  Both carry the image of a rattlesnake [...]
