A Blanket of Snow in Historic Downtown Marblehead

After a week of sun and warm temperatures in the Turks and Caicos, my family and I returned to the tail end of a beautiful snowfall and near blizzard conditions yesterday.  While the snow from Friday was the perfect consistency to stick to trees and the sunset that followed was amazing, I was several thousand feet up in the air while all that took place.  Yesterday's fluffy snow blew too hard and the light never materialized for an outing. Instead, I turned to the archive and realized that this image was taken exactly three years ago - February 9, 2013.  Another [...]

Snow in Little Harbor

This is a very old image and actually precedes the start of Wednesdays in Marblehead which I created in August 2010.  We had moved to Marblehead in May 2008 and this was the first time I had captured Little Harbor after a snowfall.  The snow was heavy and wet allowing it to stick to the tree in the foreground as well as on Brown's Island. I've gone back to this spot several times over the past few years and have never seen the scene in this same way again.  That probably helps explain why, almost 6 years after starting this [...]

A Snow Lined Road to Gerry Island

This image of a snow lined road leading to Gerry Island comes from another January snow storm - this time January 16, 2013.  Again, a morning snow storm allowed me to go out and capture the falling snow at a few locations around town.  When I realized it was low tide, I made it a point to head to Gerry Island hoping for this composition. The road to Gerry Island appears at low tide but capturing snow on the path requires the snow storm to have minimal wind and waves.  Such was not the case for the storm that just [...]

State Street in the Snow

With snow finally on the ground, it felt appropriate to revisit some images of snow in my archive.  The timing of this last snow fall and its strong winds followed by clear blue skies did not make for great photographic opportunities.  Luckily, I have a fair number of snow shots from past outings that I've wanted to share. This image of State Street in the snow comes from January 24, 2015.  This was an early and mild snow storm that preceded the deluge that would be the Winter of 2015.  The timing of this snow fall on a Saturday morning allowed [...]

A Dusting of Snow around Old Town House

I decided to look in my too-be-published archive for images of snow to share this morning and happened upon this image of Old Town House.  The image was taken on January 24, 2015 at 7:50am (right before I walked down to State Street and captured the Winter Wonderland image that represents January in this year's calendar). I tried a few angles on Old Town House with fresh snow falling around it and have shared a few already.  This vertical shot allowed me to include the tree branches above with snow sticking to the wood and adding a nice frame over [...]

Sunset in the Snow

The past week in Marblehead featured some incredible sunrises and sunsets and, for a variety of reasons, I missed every single one of them.  I got to enjoy a few while home with the family but was never in position to capture one. I decided to look through my 'to be posted' archive for vibrant sunsets and stopped at this image captured on February 10th of this year.  I shared a horizontal view shortly after taking this picture of a beautiful sunset forming over Abbot Hall which I captured from Crocker Park covered in a very deep blanket of snow. [...]

A Blanket of Snow over Marblehead

Yesterday I got my first sunburn of the season (a mild one thankfully) and also realized that the vivid memories of this past Winter's snow had started to fade.  It's amazing what a few warm days will do to the human mind and psyche and likely explains why we all continue to live here year after year.  As a former resident of Los Angeles (13 years), I can tell you I wouldn't have it any other way. With that being said, the warm days seemed to clear the way to share some images of snow that I had not had [...]

Falling Snow on Old Town House

I realize just about everyone is tired of snow at this point but this image of freshly falling snow on Old Town House comes from one of the earliest snow storms of this season - January 24, 2015.  Who knew at the time that this would be the start of a record breaking Winter with seemingly endless waves of snowstorms and freezing temperatures in between that kept the snow firmly in place. There's something about the first few snowfalls of the season that elicit a sense of childlike wonder and I was thrilled to be able to capture the still [...]

Cracked Ice on the Forest River

On Friday, March 13th, I drove home by way of Leggs Hill Road and noted the ice along the Forest River had started to break up into large chunks.  I decided to return to the spot at sunset to capture the unique view before the upcoming warmth and rain obliterated this remnant of the Winter of 2015. When I arrived at Leggs Hill Road closer to sunset, I found the view looking back toward Lafayette Street to be drab due to the overcast conditions.  However the view toward Loring Avenue held far more promise and was one I had never [...]

Buried in Snow at Old Burial Hill

Another image from my outing on Wednesday, February 25.  After exploring Brown's Island, Ben and I headed over to Redd's Pond and then walked across the snow covered frozen water to Old Burial Hill.  I captured a few images of gravestones buried in snow before reaching the gazebo and taking in this view. You'll have to pardon the pun but I'm sure everyone in Marblehead feels as though we have been buried in snow and here, at Old Burial Hill, that has literally become the case.
